Redex is a shadow of it's former self IMO
15 years ago I could could pour 30 mls down the each of spark plug holes and leave overnight
Next day look down the plug hole and see the alloy piston tops and I'd know it would have removed all the carbon round the rings as well
The engine would smoke for a week or two but then be fine
Tried it 5 years back on an engine I took the head off to replace the CHG as a quick and easy way to de-coke the pistons and it was still sat on the pistons 3 days later and the carbon was still there.
Ended up dropping the sump and removing pistons and con rods to do the job properly and put some new rings on
Like most things these days it's had all the good stuff removed
Unfortunatly your probably right 15 years ago I could could pour 30 mls down the each of spark plug holes and leave overnight

mind i do find modern carbon is harder than it used to be ? then again maybe i've lost all my good stuff over they years as well ?
the wife seems to think so anyway
Mr Muscle Oven cleaner - nothing short of stunning but you can't pour it down the spark plug holes - it's only good when you have an engine stripped down

I use it on my Diesel Mazda 2. It seems to work, cleans the injectors and makes the car run better when using cheap supermarket diesel with added biofuels. Probably would get the same result using Shell Diesel and not bothering with Redex.
Do you know it works by stripping down the engine or injectors or do you just think it works?rash_decision said:
Hi all. I was in the local Supermarket tonight and noticed they were selling Redex Petrol and Diesel Treatments for £2!! I haven't really heard much about this for a few years, but seem to remember back in the day (90s??) when it first came out it was meant to be good stuff! Does anyone have any experience of using this stuff, is it any good? I was gonna chuck some in a tank in my Shogun Diesel, or would I be wasting my hard earned £2!
Was it a rash decision to buy Redex? brunswick174 said:
redex has the latest greenclean technology in it and i've been told its hot stuff the bees knees
Spot the shill! My soon to be bro-in-law works in the marketing department for '3' (as in the mobile phone/data carrier). His job is to go around forums/social media/other internet haunts and subtly 'promote' the brand in the guise of a normal punter.
The trick is to do it without being spotted. He is quite skillful at it. One thing he knows not to do is to suddenly resurrect ancient threads that mention the brand.

ive often wondered if this stuff ever really did anything. ive bought it a few times but dont think i will ever bother with it again.
for decoking piston tops a good blast of carb cleaner should help shift most deposits. its good stuff but evaps very quick so you need to use a fair bit.

Snake oil- you'd be better off without it and not buying your diesel at a supermarket.
Oh yes indeed; in my 28+ years of driving I've had lots of diesel cars (and petrol ones too) and every single on of them has exploded due to using supermarket fuel. Also remember not to run your tank too low, because if you do that it means that you suck up all the crap from the bottom of the tank.

Its no where near as good as It used to be. I recently was involved with a trial for de-coking an ancient radial piston engine that looked like it had a gallon of brent crude burnt into the top of each piston after 90 hours flying. Tried everything as we had to be careful not to acid etch the pistons.
Redex was genuinely poop and did very little.
Best we found if you can adequately control the fumes is a litre of super unleaded petrol and leave to soak overnight. That really shifted deposits.

I am a fan of Redex since I got into engines when I was a kid.
I grew up a farm and would tinker with engines. I was amazed that the flymo engine I'd stripped the day before and soaked in Redex, I could wipe off the carbon from the piston as if it we're sludge with my finger. That stuff was rock hard the other day.
Also, I started putting diesel Redex in the tractor I drove. After a tank, cinders would come out of the funnel, this was the carbon being dislodged from the insides of the engine. It was visible at night on max revs.
So I am convinced it keeps an engine clean, that was 20 years ago, and the tractor is still going strong.

Brilliant, the sort of thing top gear should be doing.Dog Star said:

i can understand this maybe if you literally run your car dry and the fuel pump is grabbing at anything it can but really in 99.99% of cases wouldnt the fuel filter pick up any particles or sediment that might get picked up by running a bit low?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
