All these comments apply to the later version based on the 7-series (or is it 5-series) rather than the first gen car which was based on the 3.0 CSL.
The early cars (pre 79) were based on the E12 floorpan and mechanicals...later cars were E28 based ...both E12 and E28 are 5 series and the 6 series is an E24

I dont think the floorpan ever changed substantially from it's E12 origins, though the running gear certainly did.

When the E28 was launched in 1981 the E24 was revised along with it. The 6 series shared the same floorpan as both the earlier E12 and later E28 five series.

Also, due to the E28 being lighter, it was actually quicker than it's E24 sibling, which meant when BMW launched the first E28 M5 (which shared it's engine with the M635CSi) they had to fudge their figures a bit to make it appear that the M5 was slower on paper as they didn't want their flagship M635CSi to be slower than it's cheaper cousin.

It doesn't 'need' a respray to be road legal, the gearbox problem might just be the central propshaft coupling. Anyway he gets to drive around in an iconic shark, you get to drive around in a pinin, who's winning again ?

Involves removing and splitting the prop shaft. So essentially undoing nuts and bolts, note any orientation marks on the shaft and ensure they line back up when you put it back together, or make your own marks.
After driving the car a decent distance last night, I have questions for the above people who seem to think the 4th gear issue is the prop shaft bearing.

How could it be the prop shaft if it only ever happens in 4th gear? Surely there'd at least be a hint of it in other gears, which there isn't?

Still got it, though she's SORN and off the road for winter. Didn't fancy letting it rust away on salty roads!

Might end up selling it in the spring though, just don't have enough time to work on it at the moment.

One little job I would really recommend with these is to clear the sunroof drains because if they clog up, the roof can bubble through from underneath- a nightmare to repair!

Due to having no time to work on her, and needing the drive space I'm considering putting the old girl up for sale frown
