RE: SOTW Special: BMW 635 CSi
Discussion
Was at the Earls Court show with my dad when this launched in I'd guess 77 but probably wrong. Was in a strange brown colour but oh god I lusted so badly after that car and the interior was absolutely amazing. My dad sighed a bit as he realised he had a 100 mile trip home with a child nagging him to get rid of the Marina..... ah... happy days and a fabulous shed if only to say you had one!!
SOTW Special. Thank you very much, glad you all approve! And a big thanks to PH for bankrupting me finding me a classic
I always assumed it was 218! It's a lovely engine though, they get a bit tappety with age but as long as they are serviced properly and have had the camshaft spray bar mod (they can get blocked starving the cam of oil) will do intergalactic mileages.
To be fair to the article, and everyone trying to work out the power output I think you're all correct! Some days it feels like it makes 200bhp+, most days it doesn't.
Bless her.

Think it was 211?
I've just looked it up and it appears to vary between 211 bhp to 218 bhp depending on variety and age of engine. I always assumed it was 218! Oh yes, they are indeed fantastic engines.I always assumed it was 218! It's a lovely engine though, they get a bit tappety with age but as long as they are serviced properly and have had the camshaft spray bar mod (they can get blocked starving the cam of oil) will do intergalactic mileages.
The sound at high revs is very pleasing!
Love it, always liked these. Liked them even more when there was one on "Moonlighting". If it was good enough for Bruce Willis it's good enough for me.
When I bought an 80's classic a couple of years back I was looking for a 635csi I went to view what the salesman called a "decent" example in Ipswich (which was a good trip from Teesside) but the wings were shot and it was only good as a parts car. Unfortunately, it put me off buying a 6 series and I bought an Audi Quattro. This thread has got me thinking you can't have too many 80's cars on the drive though.
Off to the Bay to have a look.
Top Shedding!

The manual box transforms the car by the way, much more sporty but with so much torque you are never too busy changing gear, 3rd does for most things.
I beleieve you can fit the gearbox from a contemporary 5 series but unless you do your own spannering its hard to justify financially.

(quote) Excuse to post 635 pic! Yes PLEASE! Rot starting, little pimples poking through paint!
What a lovely car - hopefully whoever you sold it to will sort out the inner wings, as it looks from the photos like a nice one worth saving. It looks like a late one with the Highline bumpers - I always thought they looked neat but a bit weird compared to the normal chrome/ plastic ones. Nothing compared to the horrendous US spec ones of course.

Fantastic motor, well done!
I used to have an E28 M535i, which is what the 6 is based on, absolutely fabulous motor and made an awesome straight six howl when you put your foot down.
One thing though, these made 218bhp when new, not 184bhp...

Stat fail on my part. And I got the torque wrong. Mea culpa, boys and girls, but fixed now

I used to have an E34 535i Sport in Manual - Alpine White, Navy Blue Sports Leathers, etc.
That thing used to hit 130mph in 4th gear before redlining!

There is also an ominous vibration from the gearbox, Jon- tells us, but that's a fine opportunity to swap out the three-speed-plus-overdrive auto for a manual gearbox, possibly while the top rot is sorted out and the car is sorn'd over the winter.
These have the ZF4HP22 automatic transmission, don't they? That is a 4 speed gearbox with a torque converter lock up in top.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
