Not many mid-1980s supercars in the same league. or as advanced for the time

I can tell you that looking at a picture and seeing live is a completely different prospect.
It really does invoke some special feelings when you see it up close. Look, it was not created to be the prettiest car in all angles. Everything on this car was made for a purpose and to show the world in the mid eighties that Porsche could create the most technologically advanced car-period. It succeeded.
Heck, no one can call the F40 pretty either. I certainly don't call mine that. In fact I see very little to no beauty-in the aesthetic sense of course-in the F40. I see raw, purposeful aggression but not pretty or beautiful anywhere.

Great that you have both in your collection, but agree everything you say there. Is the 959 as expensive to keep as I have heard, some parts prices sound astronomical? Have they both been reliable?

All the horrendous stories regarding expense with the 959 revolve 98% of the time from the fact that the cars are not used. These cars need to be driven and warmed up to 2 engine heat cycles at least every 2 weeks in order to avoid various components seizing up and not working. Hence in that scenario, yes you can have mega money spent to put it right. Yes, parts that seize are very expensive. However these costs are not any different to Mclaren F1 or Carrera GT. It is not a car to have sitting around or put away in some collection just to collect dust. I really laugh when I hear some people screaming murder about service costs, parts etc, when they've just splashed out 250k+++ on an high end car and then worry about a 10-15k service bill. IMO, I am sorry but if you can't bear or afford these potential costs on such cars then you shouldn't be buying them in the first place. Yes some expensive cars are relatively cheaper to service but that is not the rule always. Different cars have different servicing requirements and you just can't compare all the time.

From my point of view, as I try to use it every 2 -3 weeks regularly-even for short stints- annual running costs are about 2k. In these circumstances it has been very reliable. I just think the 959 is such a cool car, and it will be vindicated as being such in the not too distant future....

I must admit I always think of the 959 in a similar way to the Veyron.

I admire the sheer brilliance of both cars' engineering and salute the manufacturers for making them, but (personally) I can't imagine even a big lottery win would see me buying either.

Great technologically, but just shy of the magic that would make me want one.

As well as the Dakar win a 959 finished 6th (I think) in the Le Mans 24 hours.
