That advert really isn't selling the car to me!
It just sounds like £500 worth of misery.
I like the idea, I'd just be looking for one without the faults and willing to spend a bit more of sheds budget.
Exactly.

I'm surprised by all the negative comments, not a bad looker & at that price just drive it until it dies.

Not at all accurate. You can see the bottom of that hole.
And what is at the bottom? wink

Some may say that it's a money pit, but I reckon any basic spannering ability will keep this in good order.

Great engines, truly bullet proof 2.3 5cyl.

Very tuneable.

Prefer the T5 estates or in particular the V70R of any vintage.

But ones thats been looked after though...

Ive got one, had it 3 years in january.
Goes like stink, best seat you will sit in. smile
Plus about one of the best stereos ive listened to.

Front lower arms, get them changed if it hasent been done already, it will wander around, when they have gone.
ETM, look for a yellow sticker, on the unit, that means its a replacement, plus it will have had the software update at the same time.
You cant just stick one in from a scrapper, because they are coded to the ecu, so need programming at a volvo dealer, to work right, if not it will be in limp mode all the time.
Top engine mount, deals with alot, so get that swapped, its only £20 from volvo.

I try to avoid pattern parts, get the oem ones, when you can.

http://www.frfvolvo.co.uk/mo-volvo-parts.asp

Mileage, i wouldn't worry to much about that, Dads s70 t5 auto had 170,000 when he changed it for a S70R.
Keep it serviced, regular oil changes and just drive the thing. smile

Oh and things like ABS modules can be fixed on exchange for about £150.00

Basically a bit of soldering!

Window winder mechanism broke....£700
CD Jammed...£300.

All this on a £4k car.

It was my local main stealer. I never gave the all clear to do the work and 3 weeks later the throttle f*cked itself again.

I went straight to Volvo UK who gave me back my money AND fixed it.

I hated the faults but i had a Friday afternoon car.

Still....I cant help loving them.

My point exactly- I imagine if you turned up, with a grand, at the dealer you would be driving away in that car.
Having first hand experience of that dealer, you wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting any money off, even though that car will be goosed.
I went to view an 'excellent condition' car for sale at this dealer once. I'd avoid personally.

I havre had that with a garage, them taking it upon themselves to do some MOT remedial work at £400 without clearing it with me.

Still, top shedding, but sadly after a Volvo 850 T5 and two Saab Turbo's I need a change from Swedish FWD turbo's however tempting, I vow to not buy another.

Having viewed that particular car myself (before buying this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250889996985?ssPageName=...) I can confirm that "looks superb, viewing highly recomended" translates as: "Looks like its been polished with a brillo pad, has scratches, various dents and the sunroof doesn't open".
Looks in beautiful condition Bob, mind if I ask how much it set you back?

I've always wondered in this situation what would happen if you refused to pay? I imagine they'd try and keep hold of the car.

There are some berks in here this week aren't there?

Assuming the car is as-described (and it's easy to check before parting with your cash) then this would be a steal.

Half of the cars which turn up in SOTW will have the faults this car is listing - they've just been bodged or buried!

Horses for courses on the looks/styling but I find it hard to imagine getting anything like the spec/toys/poke for this money anywhere else!?

Good shed!!

Good shed I reckon. Does anyone know why these apparently didn't handle too well? For a barge, the old 850 T5 had pretty decent handling.
