Bit too big and heavy for me.

Have you considered an RX7 FD or a R32 GTR ?
The R32 GTR has a similar kerb weight to the JZA80 Supra, very little between them - except the Supra is better built and more comfortable whilst being faster overall.

The FD3S RX7 is small, cramped and noisy - difficult to find an unmolested one.
RX7 1250kg
R32 1400kg
Supra 1550kg

As to which is quicker it so depends on tune, road / track used and driver its impossible to say which is faster as various Best Tuner videos will show.

Obviously my fuel costs would rocket but please, for the sake of my bank balance, talk me out of this!
Do Geenpeace or Brake! have forums? Best ask the question there if you want to be talked out of it.biglaugh

You've all lost me now.

What are these extreme running costs you speak of?
It's not so much running costs, it's "old car and things need replacing but the person who owned it last was a pauper and neglected things or did them on the cheap" type costs.

I really like them. Except that a GTR is SUCH a better car in all respects.
But they aren't.

Do it. I ran a Soarer on an absolute shoestring budget and they share many of the same parts and have a similar thirst from V-Power unleaded.

Love the engineering, the engine and the tuneability of MKIV Supras but can't get along whatsoever with the styling or interior. Seriously eyeing up Aristos at the moment which are essentially the same car (engine and all) with the interior and body of a Lexus GS300. Nice smile.

Only do it if you can afford a TT. Sorry, but I've always found the idea of having a N/A Supra a bit pathetic. And make sure that the insurance quote you got is for an import no a UK car. UK Spec cars hold a large premium over imports and can be insured for pennies.

How on earth do you get an insurance quote so cheap for something like this.

Admiral group I imagine- I looked at one when looking at the GT-Four, and it was about the same price to insure (though harder to find a good one). Conversely, Honda Type R cars seem to cost a lot to insure for the performance on offer.

Please do not post selective kerb weights for the sake of being argumentative.

The R32 GTR's weight varied over the years, and owners of these cars have actually weighed them - they fall between 1470 - 15xx weight range, the same sort of weight you would find with a Supra RZ 6 speed.

The differences are not significant enough to dimiss one car as been too heavy and the other not - to be honest they are both heavy cars. And while the FD3S is lighter and the sharpest handler of the lot, the penality is it is not as usable everyday or for long distance driving. The rotory is also a matter of taste.

If you want one. Buy one. You only live once. Besides, you can always sell it on, there is quite a market/following for them, even if it is abit tatty, there'll still be someone from the JDM scene who has always wanted to own one (possibly more then you) and would be willing to get emotionally attached, and end up buying it off you then fixing it up.

Had mine six years now and it's never let me down. Also found it very cheap to run because of all the very helpful advice and access to s/h parts etc. over at www.mkivsupra.net

I'm a die hard Supra fan, had 6 over the last decade, 4 manual's 2 auto's, 3 non turbo's, 3 turbo's!!

IF left standard then I really think there is no 90's car of anywhere near their power that is more reliable. The twin turbo's are quick even by todays standards they have very good predictable road holding, they are no lightwieght nimble roadster but they are very capable whilst providing all the creature comforts of a GT car.

The twin turbo manuals have a strong following and very (too?) high residuals, the auto's less so and are great vfm if you can look past/do without the manual control (I appreciate to some auto = not a sports car)

Whilst reliable they are getting on now, so care is needed in picking a nice one but they are still out there and I'm so glad I took the plunge in Feb 2002!

I look at Supra classifieds regularly, and I'm thinking about getingt a BPU TT6 next year. I always look at adverts for autos/tips and wonder if they're any good though - what's your view of the TT with the auto box?

Just get a nice one. Other than fuel, if you get a nice one that's not running mega HP, it's an easy car to live with.

That's the reason I want one, not normally a fan of modified but that is loverly along with most of the cars in the first fast and furious, imagine owning that one it would be recognised everywhere! (would just need to find a Ferrari to replicate the race lol)
Oh dear.

They are great for auto's, easy to live with for every day driving, no annoying changing up inapproprately etc and the torquey engines mean you don't miss out much in a straight line drag and the 30-80mph acceleration range, they are awesome overtaking machines in general. But as with most cars the manual is better for more playful rear wheel drive antics.

I would still have one if they were only made as automatics but my ideal would be a TT manual. If you get a good one the high price you pay 'should' be recouped in the main on resale if you look after her.

I hate you for posting this thread! I am
now craving one too!

I think an R33 GTS is more in my price range (and still has that mega boosted 6 pot noise) but the Supra, damn they are a good looking car.

I think you should get one, might as well while you are young! What sorta money are we talking for a decent TT manual?

I had a early 2.8i back in the day, when everyone else had the Capri Injection. The Supra was such a better car. Never liked the rounded 3.0 and the supercar stuff after that.

Supra = Medallion man
