RE: Driven: Vauxhall Astra GTC
Discussion
Have very fond memories of sticking 50k miles on a VXR in 16 months and had a lot of time for the little beastie - but was always surprised how different it seemed from the cooking Astras which underwhelmed me greatly - so if this car is already good it offers great hope for the VXR perhaps? Though the prices seem very high to me - think my VXR was £21K or there abouts?

I just noticed the £21k price tag......hahahahahahaha, it's Halloween, not April fools day! That's very close to BMW 1 series & Lexus CT200h money, & i'd take a base model of either of those over any Astra.
...hmm...not so sure...base 1 series aren't very well equiped and to be honest a bit ugly. Agreed £21k seems alot for an Astra but it is the going rate for a "premium" hatch. davidcharles said:

I feel the same, Vauxhall really need to drop the name Astra like Ford did with the Escort.
I feel the same, it's basically a white good which I guess is reflected in their current advertising. Why won't vauxhall inject some soul into their brand like others, instead of dullness?Luca Brasi said:

Kind of the way i'd describe something like an E46 BMW.....
Oh boy Please do tell me how a car, any car can look like an "awful looking piece of st", as you so put it?

Sorry I was wrong.
The Vauxhall Astra 2.0CDTI 16v SRi can be had for £18,688. Found at this website:

Regards the car itself.
I really like it. I don't think it looks like a Megane, and I don't mind the badge. Vauxhall are making some great cars at the moment (not all though).
Interior is like the 5dr model, so you get a smart dash with all the toys you would want. It may not be a Focus in the twisties but that wouldn't bother me.
So to sum up (IMO):
You get a smart and stylish Astra with a very well made dash. Also, at £18,000 it is quite good value.

My thoughts exactly when you made a pointless comment about Lexus

Fack off.
When you can get something like a new Octavia Vrs DSG for £16.5k at the moment you'd have to be mental. But then, I hate Vauxhalls, for no real reason.
Give me the Octavia without the DSG and i'll be happy... but that's a heck of a bargain for what is theoretically a £20k car...Fack off.
