Looking at that interior (and many other 80's BMW interiors) shows how ahead of their time they were. Barely looks dated. Great looking car. LPG conversion is the way forward
I love the shifter. It looks like something from an aircraft! And not like a dodgy lollipop like some Jaguar and automatic Ford Escort shifters do. Zwoelf said:

I keep a 500 sel (1985) although only a 4 speed auto V8 is does not have the limp home issue as electonics are basic and a long life auto box that even went into next series. The later S500 I had was sold due to its incredible complexity and future problems.
I found the same when looking at E32s and E38s and is a factor in why on balance, I took the older model each time. It also feels a bit lighter on its feet and drives more like a bigger 3er than the E38 does. To me, it's just a more grown up E30. urquattro said:
Also have a V12 XJS and that can be another can of worms, but if you know somebody who understands them and they (like BMW, have not been overheated) are very reliable and good driving fun - especially when a five speed gearbox change done.
Five speed auto? Or change to manual? I've long hankered for a Jag V12, but always come away underwhelmed by the relative lack of performance that one would expect compared to the theoretically less powerful biggest six. urquattro said:
Used A6 Eng. twin throttle bodies, twr ecu etc ,removed front box (non cat car) plus getrag five speed conversion (from xjs 3.6 manual) = 300 bhp plus and a totally different car from the three speed auto, it will now pull the revs ok.
Sounds excellent - as you say, a very different animal from the standard variety. renorti said:
can't really see why anybody would even want one?
V12 engines have a unique driving experience, not easily forgotten or dumped once you are used to them, I think, that is why someone will always buy this car and take a chance on the reliability.Fuel tax is the issue, these cars were wafting around on fuel at about £2 or so per gallon.
Anyone else noticed that when sotw is on form like this week, a better thread ensues? Everyone generally gets on and even varying opinions on alloys etc is dealt with respect. Stick a pile of s up for sotw and everyone goes ape s**t, lada 4x4 is better off road than a landie oh no it isn't you d**k etc etc dear oh dear.
Wonderful shed. Probably worth a gamble as long as it's in really good nick. Insurance would be an issue for many though. I tend to agree about the addictive V12 experience. My father bought an immaculate 10 year old Daimler Double 6 back in 1988. He still can't bear to part with it even though it hasn't run since about 1993! The replacement was a 1 year old Mercedes 300E (itself a fine machine). He keeps saying that the Benz was not half the car the Daimler was, and that V12 lump was what did most of it I reckon. But if something major goes bang then this shed would likely be headed straight to the specialist breaker for cannibalization.
From the £1-5k smoker barge thread, a new entrant: another E32 750iL for sale by auction with an (extremely optimistic IMO) estimate of £1,400-1,800.

First registered on 23rd February 1988, this 750i saloon has had only one owner, having been supplied new to Gabriel Holding Ltd for the use of one of the company's executives. We are advised that the service book has been lost but it is known that GH Ltd was using BMW Park Lane and BMW Holland Park for routine servicing. There are 14 related invoices on file covering the period 2nd February 1995 (at 64,451 miles) to 8th April 2011 (137,955 miles). The current mileage (19th October 2011) is 137,977 miles. Finished in Dolphin Grey with Buffalo leather interior, this iconic modern BMW comes with the aforementioned invoices, original bill of sale, current road fund licence, MoT to 21st January 2012 and Swansea V5C registration document. No reserve.

Super smooth, does anyone remember the ad where a 50p was balanced on the rocket cover?
One of the Bentley guys was demoing this on a running Continental W12 engine at Goodwood last year - my snap below Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010 by david_b, on Flickr

Interesting this, how do you identify an E38 750i Sport over a regular E38 750i? Were all SWB 750i's sports?
No they weren't - and the same way the Sports are differentiated against the standard models in all the other engines.Full body colour coding, dechromed window surrounds, staggered 18" M Parallel alloys, S-EDC suspension in the case of the V12s (sports suspension for other models), anthracite headlining, contour seats, M steering wheel and a higher stall speed torque converter and slightly lower ratio differential.
Factory Sport models are 2001MY (roughly 00X reg) onwards, prior to that it was just the standard 750i although there was a cosmetic sport pack upgrade for the earlier cars and most of the above were available as individually available cost options.
I thought the sport variant came in 740i specification only and was made 200-2001.

Can you actually get a genuine 750i Sport? I had a an absolute last of the line 740i Sport which was an amazing machine.

You can have a 728i, 735i, 740i or 750i Sport, it was limited to short wheelbase variants, not by engine choice.I thought the sport variant came in 740i specification only and was made 2000-2001.

This late one is my kind of car, very special and prefer the short wheelbase if possible as the hideous length and width of my 1994 S500 destroyed any real pleasure in driving it apart from motorways, it was a parking nightmare and soundtimes when got into a slot between two cars in std. parking slot the door would not open enough to get out.http://www.gmscars.co.uk/bmw_750_sport_greydetails...
