Most bhp per mpg

Surely you want the product of these numbers, not the ratio.
With the ratio, you get a better result with a lower MPG.
If economy was in liters per 100km, then the ratio would be the right one.
Yeah your right, I think the formula's wrong,With the ratio, you get a better result with a lower MPG.

sounds a bit wrong if you had 800bhp and 1mpg you'd get a score of 800..
Would l/100km really be the right way to work it out? Or would multiplying be the best way?
Ok forget the formula what are the top 10 cars which have the best balance of power and economy?
So far i can think of:
BMW 335d
Alfa 159 2.4JTDM
Seat Leon Cupra R
Toying with the idea of buying something similar and getting it remapped. A friend of mine had a 265bhp Leon Cupra R and could get 35+ mpg. At the moment I have an Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0v6 around 225bhp and average about 200 miles to 40 litres (around 23mpg). On a motorway run i can achieve between 27 and 30mpg if im driving economically which isnt very often..

I would struggle to put meaningful figures on it because depending how you drive them depends how much of that hp is being used.
From ownership though I can tell you the best was my mk4 gt tdi which was just over 200hp and pretty quick (would do 150mph on the clock 5up with luggage!) but would average around 50mpg on a long drive even driven damn hard.
The worst was my mk5 R32 (which to be fair to it was brand new and perhaps not 100% bedded in). That would always sit about 16mpg on the average consumption (9.7 was my worst ever average over nearly 150 miles!). It would have been ok in a faster car but it wasn't even that quick?! The Z4m I replaced it with felt more than the 100hp difference but wouldn't drop below 20mpg average no matter how hard I drove (usually 22-23mpg).
I tend to drive slower now so it's not a fair comparison but the fact I've managed 35mpg several times in my 996 is worth a note. I think the Gt2 rs is probably better than the mclaren in practice.

My turbo MX5 has ~255rwhp which would be around 290 at the crank, and the best fuel economy I've had from it was 47mpg on a boring open road cruise.
Whhaa?!!Edited by GravelBen on Sunday 13th November 07:07
Most I ever get out of my MX5 is 38mpg! It's just got breathing mods and the timing done, nothing else. How are you getting that?

Uh, only a really old one I started when I first got it!

Have made a few further tweaks since buying it but nothing groundbreaking - sticky tyres, rollbar, bucket seat, ride height and alignment. Great fun but its actually up for sale now as it just isn't getting the use it deserves.

Ben, loved the video but you appear to have a Pigeon somewhere nesting in your car judging by the sounds !http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Send me a link to the for sale ad is you have one please. EDIT, just noticed you are in NZ, long way to go for an MX5

I did 120k miles in a cupra R and whilst i agree it's a great balance, if your friend gets 35mpg he should change his name to miss Daisy. I had 28.7 average both before and after remaps. I don't think that's possible unless on a motorway at 65mph.
Alfa 159 2.4 jtdm. I had one of those for 2 years as well!!! not that quick and only got 32-33 mpg absolute tops!!! Just swapped it for a 159 1750tbi and it's quicker, and does about 25-26mpg. Much better balance of performance /economy than the 2.4jtdm but still not good!!
I'd rather see economy versus performance rather than economy versus power - our new Saab barge has similar fuel economy and CO2 figures to our Elise while producing 60bhp (32%) more power, but because the Saab weighs more than double what the Elise does, it doesn't have anywhere near the acceleration.
