I don't think there is anybody in the world who can match my rubbish figures of town short journeys driving(which is 99% of my driving)
These are my averages over 20 YEARS
99BHP @ 22.5 MPG -worst from that lot was 60bhp Toyota Starlet @ 17mpg , best was Micra 55bhp @33mpg ( yes 4 of them- all same)
No me neither confused

That must be one of the dullest things to measure a car by.
Well it's effectively the same as brake specific fuel consumption, which is one of the key parameters that engine designers look at.

I'd argue that mpg per bhp/ton (or mpg per second 0-60 perhaps!) is what you really want to measure for a sports car, but I reckon some indication of economy against performance is very useful. Fuel is sufficiently expensive now that you could rapidly save the cost of a couple of track days you might not otherwise be able to afford by, say, hooning around in, say, an Elise rather than a big thirsty V8.

Crikey! I thought my tvr was pretty frugal at 28mpg from its 4.2 v8

Do you stop the engines when you go to work, or do you leave them running?

I reckon wait until they crack the BMW 40d unit.

Audi's 3.0TDI is now over 300bhp too.

Definitely handy getting over 400 miles on a tank but having a rather nice wad of power and torque to play with in a 335d ;-)

ps To the nay sayers this is far from dull as a measurement. This is one of my highest criteria for buying a car and possibly the brightest (only) hope for piston heads over the next 20 years.

A. Why would you want a car that was slower and yet uses more fuel?

B. How else are manufacturers going to keep up with tough eco targets and still produce sports models?!

Although it sounds like another slightly dull drive, the current S4 is very impressive.

330bhp, a proper 35mpg and about 185g/km. Very impressive.

Petrols are catching up on diesels on emissions/mpg very quickly. And that's from an owner of two soot chuckers!

Trouble is in a 10 mile journey i restart engine about 5 times - i think it would better to leave it running!
But whatever i do makes little difference.

At the other end of the scale 310bhp @16mpg gives 19.37. And it weighs but 1.05 tons. No wonder I don't use it as much as I did.

mk5 r32 golf was my worst ever. I loved the car but the fuel it drank for its measily 250 hp and poor straight line acceleration was worse than anything else I've ever owned!

My 54 Ford struggles to get 15mpg... with a 130hp 3.9L V8.

And the thing weighs 3,300 or so pounds. Meanwhile my 5200 or so lb 60 Lincoln with a 315hp 7.0L gets 12-13.

Am I totally misunderstanding this?

The "best" power to mpg rating would be a low number, in my opinion. It's the sort of car you want.

eg.

Lambo with 600bhp getting 4mpg would be 150bhp/mpg
OR
prius with 120bhp getting 60mpg would be 2bhp/mpg.

Which would you rather have? smile
