I can't think of another car that is more desirable for a single car owner (ie with the need to carry kids/others)....I know this is not as exciting looking as the previous M5 (one of which i have) but it still looks terrific in my opinion. Love it

V10 sounded brilliant, but if this vid's to be believed, so does the new TT V8, which I presumed wouldn't.

I'm actually mildly impressed at how little the weight actually is considering the massive size difference not to mention all the technology stuffed into them.

The E28 is actually pretty much the same size as an E90, even the E34 was a big step up in size. The 5 series now is really much more like a 7 series used to be, while the 7 series is now more like the size of an aircraft carrier.

If you just want a modern equivalent of the E28 M5 in terms of size and performance then take a look at an E90 330i (or 335i if you want something a bit faster).

Of course the reason we worship the E28 M5 is because it was one of the first super saloons and offered a massive performance increase on other normal saloon cars of the time. We dont think twice about a 335i because it's nothing particularly special in the modern context even if it's objectively superior in almost every measurable way to the old E28 M5.

These days, of course, everyone has a super performance version of their humdrum cars so it'd take the equivalent of stuffing this current M5 engine into a 3 series to recapture an equivalent context of the ridiculous step up in performance over other cars which the original M5 offered at the time. You'd probably also have to pretend things like the C63 AMG DR520 didn't exist as well.

Anyway my point, before I got distracted, was, if you think the modern 5 series is too big and heavy (which I do) then take a look at the 3 series and you may find it to be a more agreeable size.

(Of course if you prefer the size and weight of the E30 3 series then you are basically st out of luck.)

I suspect they were expecting a LOT of people to be critical of the sound of the TT v8, hence they spent a lot of time making sure it sounded great.

Job done i think..!

You're right that you buy cars like this with your eyes wide-open to the staggering costs (or more likely, your company runs it for you so you don't feel the kicking so badly) but this M5 will drop just as fast in 'real' terms as the last one - and the one before that.
All my own money and I keep doing it. I just take the attitude that I like cars and there is an acceptable cost for driving cars that I like. I could pay off my mortgage quicker if I bought sensible cars, but I don't want to find myself in my 80s thinking that I wish I'd bought the cars I wanted instead of being "sensible".

Got to agree with Zod 100% on this, if we all worried about a car losing money none would be sold. There are very few cars that don't lose money! Look at the Veyron nearly a million to buy new and now there are some floating round for nearly half that!!! It's horse's for course's my general rule of thumb is the more they cost the more they lose!!
I for one am going to carry on enjoy these cars while they are still being built!!!

bks from Autocar as usual then.

I spent £69k on my M5 in March 2006 and sold it in September this year for £20k, so it depreciated at an average of £740 per month. I consider that an acceptable cost to drive such a car. An F10 will be worth £25k to £30k at least in five years' time.
Your practical experience has just confimred 'bks' then....

Buy a 2 year old one and let some other mug take the hit - i'm sure your avarage per month would then be drastically reduced and you would still have the same amount of fun. Spare cash? You betcha - have a second car like a Caterham too. :-)

It's always a shock when you watch car ads in countries like the US where they are still allowed to show things like taking a corner at any kind of speed which makes the body roll. UK rules are pathetic.

Sounds like Clarkson doing an impression of a V8. The V10 sounded a lot more special, IMO.

Er, no:

560/1.9 = 295

282/1.5 = 188.

Yeah because cars from the 80's are really relevant..an e28 M5 wouldn't see which way this M5 went..they timed this at 8.7 seconds to 100 mph....super cars weren't doing that 10 years ago

+1

One life - enjoy it!

Why do peeps join Pistonheads and then think they have a right to tell someone else that spending THEIR own hard-earned on cars that depreciate is wrong? Live and let live. On a value for money basis ALL performance cars are a nonsense........oh, and I just chopped in my 535D touring for an E60 M5 - collect at the end of the week biggrin

Wow they are strict:

"There should be no suggestion that competitive sport has been used in the development of increased power, speed etc in road cars (eg ‘race-bred engines’) but references to other improvements, such as reliability, in that context are harmless."

So basically driving a car(Vehical) should not be enjoyable, satisfying, or even the most naughty word "FUN".....

Understand where you are coming from. I just can't get anyway excited about this M5, nor the E60 either. I don't know what it is exactly, because I was and still am a fanboy of the E28,E34 & 39 M5's. Strange, maybe I'm just getting a bit older & wiser. Whatever, I reckon BMW have lost the plot somehow. I suspect when I see one in the flesh, I'll go wow and forget about it 10sec later.
