Since when? 294bhp/tonne vs 184bhp/tonne. It's about the same weight as the last once, infact they've been very lardy since the E39.
E28 M5 - 1341kg - 286bhp...

The E28 was also the lightest 5 series ever built. It may not be the same bhp per tonne, however it's one of the best M5's out there. All imho, of course.smile

As for the new M5? Bah. No manual, turbos, bland looks (subjective, I know)...I'll stick with the E39 being the best of the lot from a bang for buck basis and also on looks.

1905kg is the EU weight which includes 7kg of luggage, 68kg for a driver and 90% full tank of fuel. So to add less than 100g to a car over 13 years, three generations of the model and yet make it faster, safer and greener.. I don't think they have done too badly.

The M5 has NEVER been a lightweight car so i'm not sure why this always comes up..

It's doubtful it will depreciate like the E60,simply put they won't be flooded on the market and used demand should stay healthy because of this-think 1M build numbers for the first year.

I bought my E39 M5 in Jan 2001 for £48k. I reckon it's now worth around £15k, so the depreciation has only been £250/month, or 61p/mile (it's done 54,000 miles). It has now almost stopped depreciating and the road tax is only £215pa. Probably the best car I have ever owned imho.

Love it.

I cant afford to buy a new one, so I'd like to thank those that can so I can buy one in a few years time.

Agreed. I can't see them being anywhere near as popular as the E60 given their price, plus if it's true that they're built to order rather than a bunch of pre-specced ones kicked out to dealers, the demand for them will probably far outweigh supply on the used market for the first year at least. I can see them holding up rather well. They'll still drop like a stone, it'll just take them longer to do it than it did with the E60, and to a lesser extent the E39.

Far more than I can afford, or I'd have one in a heartbeat.

bks from Autocar as usual then.

I spent £69k on my M5 in March 2006 and sold it in September this year for £20k, so it depreciated at an average of £740 per month. I consider that an acceptable cost to drive such a car. An F10 will be worth £25k to £30k at least in five years' time.
Your practical experience has just confimred 'bks' then....

Buy a 2 year old one and let some other mug take the hit - i'm sure your avarage per month would then be drastically reduced and you would still have the same amount of fun. Spare cash? You betcha - have a second car like a Caterham too. :-)
I think we all know that running a secondhand car is cheaper than new, but thanks for the info... Also, if everyone tried to do that though the whole used-car market model sort of falls apart...

Buy used and you might now get one in the spec you want. With the miles on the clock you want. At the time you want it. Or to drive it away as 'your brand new car'. Or to enjoy a full warranty period and the support / experience a dealer gives you when you buy a new car from them.

Both your posts make it clear you would not want to stump for these costs - fine, your call.
But there are plenty who can afford it and who do.
For you to pass judgement that they need their heads read to make such a decision to buy a new performance car, just seems a bit, well, odd.

im afraid im another person who just cannot get excited about bmw's of late, M cars included.

Fair play they are a cracking drive (admittedly ive not driven an M5 for a few models, have driven M3's though) but i find the styling too conservative and i dont find it subtly menacing (like an rs6 for example).

And i know that im being a grumpy guts but just some sort of indicative styling back to the front end of the great 6 series and csl cars of the past, just a bit of character - please?

Looks like the M5 is back on form....not sure why people are quite so hung up with the weight....it's a 5 series, it's going to be a heavy car.

I'd love to get my hands on one, maybe in a year or two. Have BMW really said they will only build them to order? Not sure I believe that. The E60 was in a lot of demand when it first came out (my local BMW dealer imported RHD cars from the continent because it had so many people wanting cars) so not sure I believe the bit about BMW flooding the market with E60's.....the E60's problem IIRC was that a few people sold them pretty quickly because of the constant visits to the pumps.

Love the E28, the E34, the E39, a bit meh about the E60 (though it's grown on me) and for some reason that I can't really put my finger on, I really like this. A lot of people seem to say that this is a successor to the E39. I feel the same but can't honestly say why, I don't think it's just that they're V8's as the engines are pretty different. Maybe it's just that they're both about a broad range of grunt rather than screamers and the styling seems fairly handsome and restrained on both (E34 still the pick of the bunch in that department though IMO). Anyway, for what ever reason, I really, really want one of these.

This M5 is more 'subtly menacing' than the current RS6.

The RS4 looks more aggressive than the RS6.

Different car granted but i see that the AMG Merc that Chris Harris has been running for a few months in EVO depreciated 60k in that short period of time. But those first time owners wouldn't need their heads examined at all would they - in fact it would be just 'odd' to ask such a thing??? More money than sense comes to mind! This M5 is still a car that comes from a mass producer, it looks not a lot different from a diesel and will drop like a stone - BIG time! Talkin of judgement.. I could afford it, but i choose not to as it's better to have more than one car mostl bought from the sweet spot of two years old....and frankly ...i'm just no stupid! Been that, done that..;-P

I can think of nobody on this forum - nobody, with all the expensive, exotic cars people have - who I envy more than you. Owning an E39 M5 from brand new for 10 years. Just absolutely epic. Do you have any photos of the car?

If you really think it's worth £15k then there's a fair chunk of depreciating left.

It sounds very hard to value. It's a genuine 1 owner from new car. If I ever buckle and go for an E39 M5 I'd happily pay more for such a thing. Too many of them being run by people who dont look past the purchase price (Look at the guy fitting Falken 912's to his in that tyre thread) That said, £15k would be *much* more unless its particularly low mileage.
