I've been looking for a new car, a mid-sized vaguely interesting hatch, saloon or estate, but not a hot-hatch per se and unchecking the 'diesel' option on most online searches seem to instantly remove 75%-90% of my options.

I don't do huge mileage and don't much like diesels (the sound, the power delivery, the low rev limit) in general, so I want a petrol car, but it seems nearly every new car sold in the UK has been diesel (and silver!) for the last five years or so...

Diesel used to be a LOT cheaper in Europe than petrol (is it still, I travel much less than I did?), which would obviously swing the balance dramatically in the favour of diesels, but in the UK, the extra cost of the car, fuel and servicing, doesn't make them such an attractive option for anyone, in my view, unless you do high mileage.

Diesel sucks. The sooner the EU reverse their ill balanced diesel preferring structure the better.

Plus it appears that this news article never actually happened in the end.

well they went 4WD... I've seen the 'R' branding on all sorts of ste though, passat, that stupid mini touareg thing... i think it's R Design they call it, which basically is the equivalent of M-Sport to BMW's M car brand i guess.

I thought it was bad enough that VW dropped the V6 from the Golf and now this!

Although if they shoehorned one of the V8 Diesels from an Audi into an AWD Golf, well, I'd be all for that.
Or even better, as its lighter, the 3.0 BiTDi from the A6. 313hp and 5.3 to 60 (and that's in the 1800kg a6!!)

I thought R was purely for performance models and not just a trim level?

Probably means R-Line. VWs version of S-Line.

Yes, but it still says just R in places unless the word line is absolutely tiny. R Design is a thing too.

Hmmm

Wife has a Mk7 GTD golf and its very good. Not a 'sports' car as such but still fun to drive and handles well.

Had lots of good cars fun cars...... Caterham 7, 996 996tt M5 Scoobies etc

Ive just changing in a E63 AMG and gone for a BMW 535d Different cars but no less fun or enjoyable to drive (less noisy) but thats about it. Different shove in the back delivery but both very capable fast machines.

About 10 years ago I could not imagine I would have a diesel car, no never. now we have 2. Times change, diesels have moved the game along so much. Would we go for a Golf D R with the adaptive suspension then sure why not if we could afford it. Just put winter wheels on the wife GTD so a 4x4 DR would be good.
