RE: VW's R brand: we're going for diesel and 4WD
Discussion
Diesel, Golf and 4WD = lightweight and worthy of a sporty R badge?
Does not compute...
Oh and "The future is diesel and all-wheel-drive." Haven't I been reading that the future of economy is swinging back to petrol with the likes of Ford's small capacity decent output engine?
Anyway, keep diesels for high mile reps, and leave the R badge for "sporty" cars.

I dunno I think petrol turbos are going to be the stars of the future.
Some of the newer petrol turbos are returning rather increadible MPG figures and when you factor in the price gap between petrol and diesel the petrols are closing the gap on performance v economy v fun on the road.
Possibly, but don't believe a word of Vauxhall's figures. They're nearly 40% of their quoted figure for my car...Some of the newer petrol turbos are returning rather increadible MPG figures and when you factor in the price gap between petrol and diesel the petrols are closing the gap on performance v economy v fun on the road.
Parents have a 1.4 TSi Golf and even that's a fair way off their quoted economy. My old Golf GT TDi would do the stated economy with very little driver effort whatsoever.
Perhaps it's happening more in the high capacity engines, but I don't really see the economy argument for turbo petrols quite yet.
I welcome a hot diesel that had looks and performance, not sure a Golf could provide that though they all look a bit dull.

Just look at the latest twin turbo diesels on the market. You'd barely even know that the 535d/335d was a diesel, at all. People even compare the power delivery from the 123d to a larger naturally aspirated engine.
This statement is certain to cause an arguement!Out of interest, would you be able to fish up any graphs to show the similarities? I genuinly don't know how the torque curves compare!
I wouldn't know, I bought a 2.5 SE Subaru Legacy estate for my new commute to work (110 miles round trip) and my other car is an RX-8. So either I'm a sucker or I prefer the power delivery of naturally asprited engines? All I know is no diesel has tempted me.
This isn't new news as such, Lotus and Mazda have been doing the lightweight = better economy for years....VW have only just woken up to it now! Mazda's new skyactiv tech should make their diesels fun to drive as well.
That said VW do have great diesel engines and good engineering, which might make a lightweight diesel Golf R with masses of torque and 60mpg+ a goer.

I also think vw don't have the tech for a hybrid that's why they are going for diesel .
The way I see it vw going for diesel , BMW going for petrol , Toyota going for hybrid is really how this development should happen , not 1 company pushing for all kinds of tech . I think this is a good thing for everyone
I got a 170 tdi and the worst thing is the clutch , I quite like the power delivery

ludicrous, another mega-priced diesel. What this says to me is £35k+ for a diesel golf. Please don't tell me you are excited at the thought of this? GTD is 170bhp, so are they really saying they can eke more out of that unit or is this just a purely marketing initiative?
Last time I checked the VAG family had some rather tasty 3.0 diesels in the higher reaches of their range.Alfa159Ti said:

Personally, I dont see the point in a Diesel R.......
Whats the point in an R, if you loose the Soul of the R line cars in the first place, I have an R32 and the engine / exhaust note tune makes the whole experience more rewarding
What is soul and how do I acquire some ? Very interested Whats the point in an R, if you loose the Soul of the R line cars in the first place, I have an R32 and the engine / exhaust note tune makes the whole experience more rewarding

Fixed that for you.People really can't appreciate technology for what it's worth...
Diesels are great these days and will only get better. Same story for petrol cars.
There we go, end of story.
Hmm, Diesel is the future, didnt we have a thread the other day saying that Diesel was going to take a back seat and petrol come to the fore again ?
Sure this will be a really good car and be very effective, just doesnt have a lot of "want" about it for me, however fast it may be, what is it about me that wants a shonky old Mk1 or Mk2 more than this ?

Oh dear, so many haters on PH.
Wouldn't say I hated diesel, I just think it's a compromised technology which only delivers in one area and that's economy (if you care about that sort of thing). I mean they're ok if you're too tight to run a proper engine, but otherwise...I'll pass thanks.sc00byd00byd00 said:

The point is so that the diesel bummer boys who currently harp on about all there TORQUEEEEEE and their superior MPGzzz can now harp on about having an R badged specced car aswell, similar to people with BMW x18/x20d's now always have to get the... M-Sport in the end of a converstaion when describing their car to people.Can... Worms... Everywhere!!11!!
Lightweight? How is 100kg off circa ton and a half lightweight? Maybe for a van that counts as lightweight. Mmm lots of lovely nox too from our black rubber destroying friend. Even more nasties when the time comes to purge the emissions cheating cat. I wondered if VAG could get much duller and they exceeded all expectations.
