I feel sick...

You have my sympathies also.
I had my Cerbera damaged many moons ago, someone had what looked like a very hard, stoney brush and rubbed it vigorously all over my bonnet, the pristine paint work (deep met. blue) marked like a bh which really devastated me.
It made me think about where I lived (parked on a street at the time), I sorted the scratches, part ex'd the car for another TVR and moved to a nicer place with a drive, garage, security lighting etc!
There are jealous, sad tossers out there!!

I remember back in the late 1980's a family friend of ours had a nice collection of cars in his garage. They went away on holiday and came back to find the same mess you have got. Someone had broken in and poured paint stripper onto his Ferrari 308GTS, Maserati Khamsin and Maserati Kyalami. A truly sickening and pointless act.
You have my sympathies OP.
For those that say buy it back and paint it. Would it really be worthwhile?
Imsurance pay out say £5k, you buy the car back for £2k(?), paint it for £1.5k. Come to sell it for £3k (I assume this would be cat D write off?).
The OP breaks even for a lot of hassle and hard work.

You may not be able to buy it back - when I wrote of an MR2 turbo the insurers ('elephant' at the time - bunch of wkers) they wanted some ridiculous amount of money for me to buy it back, so I had to accept their monetary offer. It then went off to auction, got sold for a pittance, and I later found someone had repaired it and put it back on the road. Insurance companies are aresholes. Take the money and try and forget about it.

Whilst this is most likely, its not always the case.
I have known of mindless vandalism with no intent before.
True enough, I had my Elise vandalised in a car park in Portsmouth (with the attendants office approx 30 feet away), they scratched every single panel to the fibre glass, and carved their initials and a kiss into the front wing. The attendant didn't see a thing. Pure jealousy as we lived hundreds of miles away so unlikely to be anybody we knew. I have known of mindless vandalism with no intent before.
I really empathise with you OP. I hope you get a good payout on the insurance.

Mindless vandalism exists, but on a car that isn't visible, walking past and ignoring one that is to do this? I have known of mindless vandalism with no intent before.
Either he has pissed someone off, or someone who drives a similar car has.
Shame though, looks like a nice example.
If that was my pride and joy I wouldn't want to look at it either. It's easy to say keep it but when your hearts not in it, it's tough.
If you can get a really good price to buy it back from the insurance company, i'd say buy it back and store it somewhere you won't have to look at it every day. After a bit of time, you might be glad you kept it as a second / weekend / track car.
I'd be surprised if the police take it further than giving you a crime number. Would be nice to check the ID of the paint stripper and find out exactly what it is, maybe where it came from, that might give you some clues to who did it. Could be that you have just been really unlucky, or some one you have pee'd off. Just plain nasty either way

If you've had all the mechanical stuff done, and know it's a solid car, buying it back from the insurers is a sensible move.
I've not had it happen to me, but I can imagine how sick you must feel. People will say "it's only a car" but I know it's not, and so do most of the people on here.
I was really annoyed when my shed of a car got scratched, even though I never wash it, and it will most likely not pass the MOT in 3 months.
My sympathies.
