RE: Driven: Range Rover Evoque SD4 2.2 Dynamic Coupe
Discussion
I too hated the idea when it was launched and the link with VB made me cringe (and must have turned off many potential male customers).
Now that I have seen a few, I do think they they have really 'put it down, dawg' (as I believe the correct modern parlance is. Innit.) and it looks set to be a sucess story for Britain (jobs, exports etc.) which cannot be sniffed at.
Suggestion: We should have a fleet of these wrapped in the colours of every competing nation and let them lead out the teams as they walk into the Olympic stadium for the opening ceremony! Forget the BMW MINI's, they have had their day and are no more British than this little landmark vehicle.
P.S. It also looks remarkably like the original Range Stormer concept.

I know what you mean re the Range Stormer. When I saw one the other day, the first thing I thought of was Judge Dredd. Wasnt there a LR vehicle in that?!Now that I have seen a few, I do think they they have really 'put it down, dawg' (as I believe the correct modern parlance is. I don't mind saying I love these cars.
I hope they sell well and once someone has depreciated one for me I may well consider having a second hand one in a couple of years.

for 44k
Its a nice car, at maybe £15-16k. But 44k? I'd expect a proper Range rover with a proper engine for that.
Or is it, maybe, that they have added an ADDITIONAL choice?

Quite a few in the Jesmond area of Newcastle
I found them surprisingly small to be honest look a lot bigger in pictures
Got to say, none have appeared in my neck of the woods - Shenfield/Brentwood, Essex. I was expecting lots of RR sports to be traded but doesn't seem to have happened. yet.I found them surprisingly small to be honest look a lot bigger in pictures
I'm amazed at the reactions so far to this vehicle. So much +ve stuff for PH is a refreshing change.
To allay some of the "myths". VB had a minor input into some of the interior colours, and one of the interior aluminium finishes, (which nobody ordered). They only got her on board to use her name! Major mistake.
Visibility is fine (at least from the 5 door), even through the "letter box" rear window. There are 5 cameras and front and rear sensors, so visibility isn't really a problem for parking or at junctions. There are cameras in the front wings that can look forwards or sideways at blind junctions. There are also cameras in the door mirrors that look down at the kerb and front wheels (helps prevent kerbing alloys!).
It isn't small. It's wider than a Range Rover Sport and has 1" more rear headroom than the Sport, although it is shorter in length and height. The interior is a very comfortable place to be and surprisingly roomy. The full length pan roof makes for a light and airy interior - especially for rear seat passengers.
The 3 door is difficult to get in/out the rear - but hey! .... it's a coupe. If you need quick access and full sized passengers, buy a 5 door.
The Meridian surround sound system puts out 825W, has 17 speakers, plays CDs, DVDs, Analogue and Digital TV.
It has heated memory seats, heated steering wheel, cruise, voice control (that works), hands free phone, paddle shift, Magneride suspension, keyless entry, keyless start, powered tailgate, full soft Oxford leather interior, auto dimming lights, auto dimming mirror, auto lights on, auto wipers, etc etc. I'm sure I've missed a few things, but you get the drift.
I'm really impressed with it (as you can tell). I'm not a salesman for LR, but I am a bit of a petrolhead. The fact that it's a 2.2 diesel should not put you off -it's a quick and fast car. It's not a supercar, but it is very capable, comfortable and works offroad too.... better still I'm getting over 37mpg. A nice change from my previous car (DB9 at 14mpg).
It's not for everyone, but it ticks all the boxes for me as I'm getting older and slowing down. If I hadn't sold the DB9, I would have lost my licence by now - (it was so frustrating to drive slowly).
I'm 1300 miles into ownership so far, and well happy. It's not a Full Fat Range Rover, but then they're 80k now. You can have a basic Pure Evoque for 29k, all the way up to a Prestige (or Dynamic) fully specced at about 51k. Mine was 46k and well worth it.
Hope this sheds some realistic (although slightly biased) light on the Evoque.

For anyone considering one just realise this - the 'Design Executive Director' for this car was Victoria Beckham. True story.
True story my arse.Ever heard of the LRX? Posh Spice had nowt to do with that.
Some stupid, moronic, over paid, marketing guru decided it was a good idea to hook her up with the Evoque as a PR stunt and it has massively backfired. The only thing I dislike about the Evoque is the VB pseudo tie in at launch.

You mean if you go into the nice dealers with 44k asking for a RR with a proper engine, they FORCE you to buy this instead??? THE bdS.
Or is it, maybe, that they have added an ADDITIONAL choice?
Oh, im not saying there will be any shortage of mugs with £44k to burn lining up at dealers in the same way theres no shortage of mugs willing to pay £3 a tin of M&S beans that in all likelyhood come from the same factory as 30p tesco value tins of beans. Or is it, maybe, that they have added an ADDITIONAL choice?
I would just like the choice of paying £15k for this or £44k for a TDV8 Range Rover that can actually offroad, fit 5 people plus provisions, and tow a boat behind it. This just doesnt add up to a £44k car (to me)

They are all 2wd and Victoria Beckham did all the AutoCad drawings, engine selection and road testing herself.
Anyone who buys one of these instead of a 7 year old Supercharged full fat Range Rover, series Landy, G class or a UniMog is a big girl's blouse.
Big girls blouse here!Anyone who buys one of these instead of a 7 year old Supercharged full fat Range Rover, series Landy, G class or a UniMog is a big girl's blouse.
I've had mine 2 weeks & absolutely love it.. Mind you I wouldn't be seen dead in a RRS, that design is about as attractive as Fatima Witbread !!
4 door auto with small wheels in Mauritius Blue for me!

Have you looked at boring car prices recently? £30K for a specced up Golf, £38K for a Fiat/Abarth 500etc. Yes it is a tad over-priced to me, but, if they can get that then good for them.for 44k

We had a 5dr 2.2 SD4 4wd Prestige w/lux pack on order from a long while back, but ended up cancelling our order. The tag came to about £43,000 and we just couldn't justify that outlay when a Skoda Yeti in top spec was about half the cost. Yes the Evoque was a lot nicer in and out but as a family runaround the Yeti was more that capable.
If I were financially capable I'd have the Evoque in a heartbeat.
But when you think that for the price of an Evoque you could have a top spec Yeti and a 997 Carrera S it starts to look a bit silly...

It's 2WD??!!
I honestly thought these things were 4WD.
'Land Rover' doesn't really work if it's only 2WD.
A small Jaguar hatchback would have been more appropriate.

Now, in my HUMBLE OPINION, these seem, especially in 2WD guise, are just another 'lifestyle' vehicle for trendy types who want to be seen in the latest trendy car, regardless of wether or not it is actually any good, performs well or is practical and fit for use. Rather like an up market Nissan Juke, for example.
And £42,000???
Come on.
