Top shed, but the engine is ancient- the 12v 4-pot 2.0 and 2.3 engines were old hat when the 124 was launched- they'd already been around in the 123 for ages and are underpowered for a big estate. Mercedes used to be quite lazy with their engines- build a good one then fit it/variants of it to everything for aaaaages, even a new model. The 124 really needs a 6-pot to get a move on smile
Surely it was 8 valve, as were most of the engines at that time.

I don't want to start a habit of posting alternative SOTWs but then I saw this

You have got a point - I had to go and have a look at that S class, always liked that one. Seem to remember they were a good bad guy car in the movies ? Beverley Hills Cop if I remember ? Wasn't there one doing daft things in a Die Hard movie as well ? Anyway I don't want to start taking sotw off track so I will chip in and say that this weeks looks like a decent car - not for me maybe but lots of life left in that old workhorse - quite like this era of Merc as well.

THAT

I mean, cmon...
I'm glad you you don't want to start posting alternatives, as that one isn't. How do you consider a saloon of a different class with a 4.2 V8 an alternative to a 2.3 estate.

You've gotta admit that S Class is tempting ?! Boots big enough for two so you can still carry seven as well....

Loving the TE, top shedding. Cloth and 4-pot not ideal for this type of bus, but could live with it for the price. Anything in decent condition, with the leather and 6-cylinders is going beyond sheds means now anyway.

A V8 S-class is in a different league of ££ to run and maintain.

I run a diesel 124 as a daily, super reliability and very comfy. The doors weigh about a tonne each! Love the old girl.

Leather is so nouveau riche!

Looks like something my grandad would turn up in. I was hoping for something inspired by 300bhp/ton's. A nice bargain yank tank

Does anybody now if the 3.6 straight six from a AMG C36 will drop straight in ?

It is a quality car in decent condition, so probably quite a good buy. Nothing about it remotely excites me though, particularly the cloth seats and 4 cylinder engine. I'm sure it had more than 125bhp though - maybe 132bhp?
I'm not sure the old money/new money thing means anything in the North where I am, but I would much prefer leather. It looks, feels and lasts better - though this Merc's seats are in fine shape.

Loving the S124 Estate!

Solid cars, probably one of the best-looking E Class Estates.

Large, smooth and reliable. Yes, that engine will be a tad underpowered, but will cruise fine on the motorway.

You think this is bad, they also did a 2.0 litre version of it!

Such a classy and respectable looking machine. My choice would be a 300TE, or a later facelift E320 Estate. Now that is a decent engine.

Coincidentally, they are going dirt cheap now. Missed out a bid on one yesterday - 1989 'G' Reg 300TE in Navy Blue, Long MOT and & Tax for £300 on eBay! Missed out by £20! Was gutted, as it looked a half decent example.

Looks so much better than the mis-proporionate W210 E Class Estates....

yup, S124 E36 estates were made, I remember a bloke somewhere had a whole set of 124s- estate, coupe, saloon and cabrio, pretty sure they were all AMG...

I had a 300E when I lived in the states (same engine as 300TE) the fuel economy was crap, but great engine.

Here I run a E300 diesel, 35mpg as opposed to the 20 or so the 300E got...

It doesn't mean much in the South either. Says "corner shop owner" to me more than "landed gentry".

Classic Range Rovers and Legacies, on the other hand...

Cloth was common in old Mercedes. I remember the W140 S-CLASS came out and leather was an optional extra, even on the £85,000 S600 V12 model!

I got an E280 estate for less than half the shed budget earlier this year, complete with private plate (and not an Oirish one at that).

There are still some bargains to be had on fleabay despite the high prices in the classifieds and the classic car mags.

Sadly head gasket now goosed although prior to that gave 6 monhts of fun wafting. Definitely need to go for the 6 cylinder model though, it does pick up its skirt and fly when required whereas I thnk a 4 cylinder one may struggle.

Disagree, this is one car where I reckon cloth looks better than leather, there is something about Merc cloth, the 190 wears it better to IMO

The cloth is brilliantly hard wearing. Could be worse, could have 'MB-Tex' or vinyl to you and me. They're still at it, now called 'Artico Leather' and fooling many new MB buyers into thinking they've got half-leather seats when it's actually half-vinyl.

Super Classic, last of the real Mercs (are you listening M-B) built like a tank.
Cloth is OK as this is a wagon, always looked better than leather in these anyway.
A very attractive shed
