Like it - just the comment about wandering to the left worries me. If I was selling it I would have had it tracked therefore I instantly think something is bent/damaged underneath. Ignoring that though I like it !
I think he also says it needs two ball joints.... which may explain it. But for a grand you cant go wrong............. or can you? smile

yes 827 or 820 turbo are both much better than the 825.

lol a 5 Series, which new would likely have been double the cost. Great comparison then.
You might want to check into that 300, wouldn't want you making sweeping, unresearched statements just for effect now would we.... wink

827SLi > BMW E39 525i BTW. let me know what you come up with smile

From what I remember the 825 engine had more destructive capabilities.

I had a K reg 820i, only car I ever bought because of the seats, it had lovely black Recaros and had some large (factory) alloys, painted in a nice Bluey Green, it was a sallon and I thoughtt it looked really smart, it came with a knocking engine, which we changed but it wouldnt run, had used the wrong flywheel which even though it was from the same model and year they had changed the reluctor wheel on the back so my ecu didnt understand the data it was getting and wouldnt fire, sure the gearbox coming out again when I twigged and it started first time !

For me these were a cheap, big car, they werent as good as the other exec's but they werent that bad, more a big 200/400 than a genuine BMW competitor, I thought even the 2.0 moved ok, much better than a 2.0 Granada anyway, cornered ok and generally was inoffensive.

The Coupe for me always holds some strange allure, in a decent colour with the 2.0 turbo engine and styling (wheels, ride height etc) it looks superb, one of the most handsome cars this country has ever produced but for some the badge makes it ugly, put an Audi badge on it and they would love it, trouble is most are in "retired Major" gold with the staid looking wheels.

Of course immortalised by Alan Partridge, another inspired piece of automotive casting by Mr Coogan, oh how the lexus owners laughed, until the next series....

So, what would Alan drive now ?

My dad had a few of these over the years, all the vitesse model - I think two 827 and one 820 turbo.

None let him down or cost much money at all. All ate the windscreen wiper drive assembly on a regular basis.

"Honda's insistence .. that the front suspension should be a double-wishbone affair in order to allow a lower bonnet line stymied the 800's ability to produce a pillow-soft ride."

Yes, that inferior double-wishbone design .. it was Honda's fault! rolleyes

I seem to remember my dad saying these cost in the region of 25k new and slightly more for the coupe. 25K for a Rover?? come on. Next door neighbour had a 820i hatchback, said it was the biggest piece of st he had owned, mind you he did have an S1 Elise tucked away in the garage.

For just shy of £700 it does look good value, has all the toys etc...

Why was it the only good thing about the car? Hate it when people say such things without reason.

The reason was the engine was a great sounding and very smooth V6.
Things i disliked were Nasty interior,Terrible Gearbox,Build Quality and much more !

Always had a soft spot for the 820 fast back - it was actually the first car that i had ever driven in quiet lane with my old man. He was teaching me how to use the clutch and balancing the accelerator at the same time to find the biting point.
Maybe not the best car to try this in, but when i did pass my test many years after and the car was still in the family (must of had it for about 8 years) it finally died on the M40 when i put it into 5th gear, it popped out and i forced it back into 5th from 4th and something destroyed itself so there was no longer any drive to the front wheel. Engine was still fine and running, just no drive.
Ultimately it was scrapped frown

If that was remotely close to me, I'd have bought it on the way home.

Preston, probably mercifully, rules out an ill thought impulse purchase.
