Regarding the apathy towards the appearance, what do the following cars all have in common?

MX5
MR2
Boxster/Cayman
S1 Elise
911 C2
Impreza/Evo

They are all GREAT cars, universally revered all accross PH, even if they don't float your particular boat you still respect them. But non of them are great lookers and it doesn't matter, I think the GT86/BRZ will go down in history in the same way.

Quite an exciting review to read. As someone said, hopefully a cult car in the making.

Sounds fantastic fun, but that price tag....

Even taking the offical figures with a pinch of salt, impressive economy too.
Which price tag, 25 or 28? Maybe if you ask nicely they will sell you one at a loss wink

He's not really at that qualified to be able to say, if I'm completely honest...

Only downside is we've got 6 more months of waiting, pondering and opining online.

Hope we don't lose interest in the mean time.

Can someone render a targa (or t-bar) roof on this? I know it would destroy the whole ethos of the car as well as the CoG, but I have fond memories of removable roof 'yotas smile

I like the principles of it, but I can't afford a £25k car frown and if I could afford a £25k car I'd find it very hard to go past a 997 or most other pork in favour of it.

youde be mad to buy one new but its nice to hear positive things about the cear, i think it looks ok but the spoiler is ott, the shape keeps reminding me of a mk1 z4 coupe though and at this price id rather have a z4m, saying that if you were worried about about running costa etc this could be a bargain in a couple of years

I really like this. I'm not fussed on the looks, and would certainly be waiting till they're a good few years old, but they sound great.

On the downside, I wish it was just a 2 seater, and it would be nice if it looked a bit better... But if it drives as good as I imagine then I could probably forgive it that.

Out of interest how do you think this would compare to say, a 2.0 MX5? Similar power to weight, the Mazda is lighter and most importantly the roof comes off. [tongue out]

I love it, I even love the wing. In 6 or 7 years time, I could definitely see myself going for something like this.

I'll be taking mine with the wing, of course.

Oh bugger, posted on the wife's account. OwenK here.
And I was just about to wonder how tall MR OewnK must be smile

In my town you'll get 1/2 of a 3yo Cayman, or maybe 2/3 of a new 370Z for the price.

I figger it's down to whether you trust your local Toyota dealer or Subaru. Since it is mechanically mostly Subaru, I think that's a point in favor of the BRZ

I think that's where I am on it, although in my case I have a £25k car, but it has four seats, ISOFIX and room for a buggy and accompanying baby detritus...

Can't wait..kind of bummed that's it's had so much interest but...this car has cult status already and it hasn't even hit the showrooms..I think these will be a wise investment, I don't see them being 12k @ 3 years..I think there will be a queue for these...Il be in it.

The interest is a good thing, even if it means these will hold onto their value and price many of us out of driving them for years to come, because if they are a financial success for Toyata and Subaru it will give hope to the Japanese manufacturers that there is a future in sporting cars and not just the bland crap they've been churning out recently.

When they wanted to do it, the Japanese were at the top of the game for providing affordable performance cars of all flavours, with and incredible strong aftermarket scene. However, they lost their way in recent years and off the top of my head, bar the GT-R have not made a sporty performance car that has his the mark with many people. So the Impreza rumbles on in one guise or another, no longer a rally rep but attempting to tackle the Germans at the luxury performance game. Mitsubishi lost their way with the Lancer, made a new Galant VR4 and called it a Lancer because they thought it would not sell otherwise, and then it went on to not sell well anyway. Toyota have not made anything performance oriented in years and Honda have put the Type R brand to bed for now. The Japanese need to be reinvigorated in their spirit of competition against each other and the rest of the world, and good sales and strong interest in the Toyobaru project could be the first spark in a resurgence of the Japanese performance car.

We should all keep out fingers crossed.

my newest car is 1995 and this is the first new car in about over a decade that i'm thinking about buying. agree with whoever said this car mst be kept 100% standard. too much power means you can't rev the hell out of it in every gear on a bumpy cop-free back road; wider tyres are great for trackdays but all that boring extra grip and tramlining take the fun out of a road car; aftermarket exhausts are tedious to listen to and sap power; and the inevitable chavtastic "handling" / lowering kit will make a complete balls of it. if we buy this car, other manufacturers may follow suit.
