Been driving a simiarly specced one- manual, LSD, Shortshift, sports chrono etc. (admittedly without the aero kit or the ceramic brakes). I've been getting 25 mpg on mostly shorter runs. Needless to say it's awesome, though I began to want more power after a day or two...
Looks best in metallic grey, not vomit green.

The car nerd in me says ceramic brakes significantly reduce unsprung weight. This allows the suspension to follow the road's surface faster, increasing grip and feedback to the driver. Improvements in bite and fade resistance are under the foot of the beholder.
Did the spec list include braided hoses?

For that price I'd want them hand weaved out of Steffi Graff's pubes.
That is an extra £824 on top.

£2024 for the Schiffer limited edition could be worth a punt for collectors.

£72k is a lot for a car that doesn't have air conditioning.

I am waiting to take delivery of an R which arrives in February and my spec is virtually identical barring PASM (not an option), PCM/Bose upgrade, painted wheels and that awful paint job. I also ticked auto-dimming mirrors, aircon and PDK bringing the whole package to £58k for a new vehicle. With negotiation, I got the dealer to throw in PSE and floor mats otherwise it would have been £60k.

I don't know if that S would cost the same to spec now but given the car I got for that value and what I see equivalent second hand Cayman R's going for (plus or minus a few of the tick boxes I chose), why not go for a low mileage R?

And yes, paying £72 for floor mats still irritates the hell out of me. I'm sure the car will have just enough fuel to get me off the forecourt and to the nearest garage as well.

It really is a joke when a car costing £45K base doesnt have these things as standard.
Floors mats £71 that's a snip I remember seeing Nissan floor mats on the options list for my GTR retailing at over a £1,000 lol!

Perhaps the more exquisitely individual new cars can be tailored, the less the likelihood of finding a second hand car that suits the tastes of discretionary buyers. The surviving marques know the game sooooo well.

It's very nice and all, but I attended an Evo track day at Bedford Autodrome where this particular Cayman was spanked around the track all day long by various guys from the mag. I suspect it may have had a very hard life. My money would go on a Cayman R.

They really do you know.

A friend of mine works for a Manufacturer and he is the man who prepares Press cars for them. he spends a lot of time going through every single aspect of a car, rebuilding things, regreasing, refitting, perfecting, before they get let out to journos. journos are a spoilt bunch, if there is the slightest fault in the Press car they can bh about it and ruin a car's launch, so they take no chances and prepare teh F*** out of the cars.

AFAIK, they are not the only ones.
Here's my experience. I tried to buy a certain 997 C2S with Powerkit and was told it was a Porsche executive/directors car. Just before putting my cash down, I smelt a rat. The car felt a bit flat to me especially for a car with a powerkit upgrade. I checked it out and thank's to PH, I found that this car had in fact had been an ex press car and pictures of it were all over the magazines and Internet.

The car had masses of over revs of the BAD type too (downchange overrevs) and when I spoke to the main dealer selling the car, I got an "oh well" (being polite here), and got hung up on! No, I am not making this story up. In fact if you search my post history it is probably still on here but years back.

Can't say I'd ever be tempted into an ex press car especially after it's had the arse ragged off it. And before anyone asks, I actually do now own another Porsche and I did buy it from a main dealer.. lol

The best model Porsche currently do (yep I'd rather have one than a 911!) and in a great colour. Not struck on the black wheels but that's a minor quibble as it's just about perfect in every other way.
Agreed, the Cayman is the superior car in terms of dynamics. If only they put a gt3 engine in one. Trouble is they won't as it would monster the 911 then. Still love 911's mind. Just think they are selling themselves short a tad. Although I suppose if they did they may kill off the 911 and they won't do that to their halo car.

Very interesting story and a warning for all.......

My point was really that they really do prep Press cars big time, to the Nth degree.

If a 997 can get caned to the point of loosing, what, 50BHP at a guess from what you say, while still very young, that is shocking. With modern motorbikes those that are spanked from new make more BHP it is said.

Don't like that milky green. Vipers are a more vibrant green, I'd call that frog or lizard green or mint julep (sp?). Whatever, I wouldn't choose it.

No different to buying a GT3RS from a track day enthusiast though.

As long as its been properly maintained then whats the problem?

Well I bought this car last week, it really has not disappointed at all!!
I was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time, didn't even test drive it...no need?
I love the colour but guess it's like marmite you either love it or hate it.

This got me looking at the classifieds. Early Caymans in standard and S flavours, with good specs and decent mileage are now at a VERY tempting price

The "iPod interface" is actually an FM transmitter. It's not integrated with the in car system at all. redface

Aren't you worried about it's early life?
