sorry, i was being sarcastic....a few on here keep saying it's expensive as you could have xxx for the same price 2nd hand; which is a rather pointless thing to say IMO. dapearson was saying bang for buck you'd get an E92 M3 for the price of this golf, to which i replied with what you quoted me smile
I'm not sure why we appear to be arguing. Personally i wouldn't spend that kind of money on a golf. I get that comparing new to 2nd hand is perhaps a bit unfair. Having said that spanking £5k on an E46 M3 seems a little brave!!!

Riggers: Getting back "on topic". Why is the later DSG better than the old? I really wanted a DSG when we went shopping for a VAG diesel hatch last year, but wasn't brave enough to buy one without an iron clad warranty.

My mk5 in its winter boots:

In this case 16" VAG steelies and Conti rubber. They have downsides in terms of outright grip and staightline stability, but overall make for a much nicer ride. As a result I've delayed replacing the crap standard oversprung & underdamped VW suspension until the spring.

I don't know about reliability and longevity, nor do I have any concrete facts for you (helpful , aren't i?).

It's just that the newer installations of DSG I've sampled (Polo GTI, Golf 6, Caddy diesel) seem more responsive and generally better matched to their respective powerplants.

I'm pretty certain it'll be to do with the engineers properly getting their heads around DSG technology, and learning how to get the best from it.

I have to say that with the new R's being the same 2.0 lump from the GTI's, they are rather a pointless car now.

VW have seriously limited engine choices since say the very confusing line up of blocks in the MkIV.

New GTI with remap will be cheaper, faster and has some heritage.

remap the R and you have a 310+ bhp 4wd golf that can put the power down, which is pretty neat imo

do you mean in D/S mode or manual?? I always thought the DSG in my 07 car was brilliant but i kept it in manual always because couldnt stand the way it chose to change gear when you didnt want it to in auto mode..

Yeah - D/S mode - it's genuinely getting to the point where you might actually call it 'good'...

Not feeling the matt black wrap, but with the change left over could get some decent wheels, some lowering springs an exhaust and turbo elbow to get 400 bhp without chipping the ecu and leave the engine warrantee intact...

Ok, not quite new but almost. And could probably get a brand new FQ360 for the price of the gti 35 these days?

Having had both, for me the Evo was a much nicer place to be in, if that's what you're after, or you can leave super cars in your wake, if that's your thrill.

They are also very exclusive, a golf is, well, just a golf.

Having said all that, Mitsu service and sales are low of the low.
You need to be careful suggesting alternative uses for the money round here, especially on used cars. They don't like it.
Good, let them buy new cars, we need the suckers to soak up the depreciation smile

Turns out you are correct, and a Pulsar used for the engine shot......

Deserves a spot in the 'Badly Modified cars' thread though!

I'd like to see a real worldy running costs comparison with the Evo X/STI/135i. Things like servicing, parts, insurance, average fuel consumption, depreciation.

Hmmm...don't What Car do that sort of thing?

EDIT:
According to the beige turd that is What Car;
Well both the Impreza and Evo X feel cheap.

'... the Evo being pricey to run, with a frightening thirst for fuel, while the ride is punishing'. BMW 1 gets an average 3/5.

They seem to cream themselves over the Golf though. The VW gives everyone at What Car a permanent chub.

So there you go, Golf wins. Golf R wins even more.

Edited by Hellbound on Wednesday 14th December 16:16
Having driven the 135i & the Golf GTi, if it was my money, i'd take the BMW. But then i've always thought Golfs were vastly overrated & over priced.

Anyone else notice the "handles like a Golf" while showing a RWD 1 series on that advert?

Hang on.......£440 for parking assist front & rear!? Why? I'm not sure any enthusiast would want that option, also, this is just a hatchback, if you need help parking, then that's seriously bad news.
