You need to be careful suggesting alternative uses for the money round here, especially on used cars. They don't like it.
you're missing the point, by comparing apples and oranges.

manufacturers simply cannot price their NEW products based upon the prices of better, 2nd hand products. compare new with new, and 2nd hand with 2nd hand smile

we all know you can get better cars for the same price when buying 2nd hand, but these cars will become 2nd hand one day and be cheaper. cars need to be new at some point, you know.

Yea i hate it when people say that type of thing too. It is also enough to buy 620 6-foot christmas trees.
It's a matter of opinion. That was mine. You clearly have yours.
it is a matter of sense. if you were in the market for something like a 2.0 Golf GTI you probably aren't going to consider an V8 RS4 as an alternative.

Good point, but I'm pretty sure you can get a brand new FQ360 for the price of the ed35 once you spec the ed35 up to the FQ360's level of equipment. Sat nav, HD music server, a really really good brand sound system, blue tooth etc which all come as standard on the 360.

Don't get me wrong, I like golfs, good all rounders no weaknesses, and I'm looking at buying an R32 at the moment...

Blimey. Talk about zzzzzz...... with this car. Couldn't you have acquired something interesting?
Miaow. wink

It's certainly interesting to me. I actually can't remember the last time I looked forward to a commute in a 'daily driver' so much.

I know a Golf isn't exactly a Ferrari, but I think it'll prove a fine 'jack of all trades' at the very least.

And there will be some more 'conventionally interesting' stuff heading the way of the PH fleet soon, I promise (but can say no more)...

FFS. I see your point, but if you were wanting as much bang for your buck as possible then you might though, which is was my original comment was about.

if you were looking for a daily driver could you not just get a new Skoda Octavia VRS and tweak it a little? Same comfort, same size, same perf, LOADS cheaper? In any case I wouldn't go for a premium-priced 'special' limited or anniversary model as a motorway mile muncher.

Or a 360 with a bit of haggling. What's your point?

the point is not necessarily about making an example of a car being overpriced, but questioning the purchasers psychology of buying a VW Golf when for 4k more they could be owning (for example) an Aston Martin V8:

If you wanted bang for buck then you why would you be spending £30k on an M3?
Less than half of that gets you an M5 or something crazy with plenty of change...

Because someone who wants a new golf, with warranty and a guarantee with reletively low servicing costs is not going to suddenly decide to buy a 2nd hand Aston or Ferrari....

That 'it's like a golf' advert always annoys me.....

Rear wheel drive BMW "Handles just like a golf"

Tinkering on the engine of some car "Sounds?? Just like a golf"---Erm I'm pretty sure that is a golf, a Mk3 VR6 Golf!!!

Yes.... (and the Skoda would be bigger, esp if in estate form)

....but.... Part of the point of the point of running and writing about cars like this is to explore all sorts of different cars.

If it was purely about what I personally would run and buy, you would all get very bored very quickly of a succession of old BMWs (though maybe that would be alleviated with the odd ratty Jag or Honda...) smile

(Love the idea of the Skoda, though - great car)

This is hitting the nail on the head for me.

But hey, some folk love golfs and it makes them happy to have the best gti available.

there's a few NEW Evo 360's for under 30k if you look hard enough.

I love VW but the X is a much superior car and will destroy it in every area other than fuel consumption and image.

Well found. I'm not even sure about image, Evo X 360s look amazing, you get so much more attention, admiration and enthusiastic remarks in the X than a Golf, guaranteed, if that's you're thing.

Such a dull looking car, looks the same as every tdi out there.

Now where's that "cars I would NEVER buy" thread?

when I first drove a Mk6 Golf GTI, I did not like it. I felt that, after the fabulous Mk5, it had slipped back into humdrum-dom
Wow, really?!

From my experience I thought that the MkV GTI I had was a bit dull! I felt it was quite underpowered considering it's weight. It had the DSG box which was novel and did work extremely well - apart from the odd double gear drop when I booted it which was utterly pointless considering the power band!! But I grew very tired of it (The DSG box that is) and I felt it made me a lazy, unengaged driver. To me the car just wasn't sporty!

Replaced by a MkVI GTI no DSG - for me was a massive difference, I no longer had leather and heated seats but this was minor. I felt the power increase was about right for the car, it was much more thrashable. The ride was much better, it had more poise, felt lighter and far more agile round country roads. I felt the car gave better feedback and encouraged me to drive it fast. Also I no longer had to put up with the awful blurry red screen in between the dials!

Ultimately I needed something with the engagement/fuel economy of the mk2 Renaultsport Clio though. But I can strongly recommend a cheap MkVI in a few years!

Yup. Two things there:

1)I reckon the DSG has come on in leaps and bounds since the Mk5 days and,
2)I think the fact that the Mk4 was such a lemon (in GTI terms) possibly made the Mk5 seem better than perhaps it was...

Hmm good point, would be interested to see how the newest DSG boxes fair. I definitely feel the Mk VI is a good evolution of the GTI though, not as big a jump as 4 to 5.

More on topic, not overly impressed with what the Ed 35 seems to be offering - just throw a map at, say this - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3373408.htm

Plenty of change, new vs old - I KNOW!
