Hmmmm Wifes new SLK..... SL.... separated at birth? SLK costs £320 a month on contract hire but with the SL you get more pronounced side strakes and an inch more leg room...

Firstly, I think your Wife's car looks very nice. But come on now... you know what you get really. More effort spent on the engineering, a higher quality of interior appointments etc, and unless you want the SLK55, you cannot have a V8 in the SLK.

However, I can see the resemblance a little too clearly I will agree. I hope Mercedes doesn't turn into Audi, where at a distance it's hard (for the masses wink ) to recognize an A8 over an A4.

On the matter of this SL though, I think it looks pretty good to be honest! The only thing I'd change would be the headlights, as they look a little too big imo. Apart from that it looks really 'GT-ish' and I imagine it'll be a great car to cruise to X Destination in with the top down. smile

  • Edit for don't->doesn't :P

You could say that about almost any car range.

7 Series? Just a bigger 5 Series. 5 Series? just a bigger 3 Series. A6? Just a bigger A4. E Class, same as a C Class, only bigger.

Not sure what that proves to be honest. smile

By the way, your wife's SLK looks great.

Another car everyone said looked rubbish when it was first released as photos, but looks fine in reality.

Just like the SL will.

Thanks for the positives for a change guys!! Its true the SLK looks much better in the flesh - I think I'm actually more surprised at how much there is identical in the SL interior, switchgear, vents, heater, touch screen, steering wheel+++ I thought that was where a little more differentiation for the cost would come in...

Merc making a fuss of wiper systems? Nothing to see here, move along etc.
Exactly what I thought when I read it, if thats all there is to make a fuss about, its somewhat disappointing.

Front-end styling isn't under-whelming too, not pretty which is everything a convertible/roadster should be.

The germans just don't understand styling, do they ?
This thing is the automotive equivalent of the beach towel on the deck chair.

I don't like the front end, the grill protrudes too far IMHO

the current model looks better from that aspect,

It looks better still in these pictures. I'm warming to it, although still a bit too aggressive for me. I can also see now a stronger resemblance to the very popular r107. The upright grille, obviously, the linear grille and lamps, the domed bonnet, the strong horizontal lines on the flanks. It lacks that car's restraint but clearly doffs its cap in that direction. I hope it is available in colour and not just grey scale, especially the interior.

I think this SL will be pretty damned special in the metal. I love how aggressive it is. There's so much blandness on our roads, sometimes you need a visual smack in the face. And that's before we get to the AMG Black.

Serious engineering!!
Reservations about the styling. The overhangs look to big and the wheel are to deep into the arches.
Front end to big and gapey!
Prefer the old design.
Mercedes new design langauge is not that appealing. The new C63 coupe, SL and SLK and non AMG E Class are just not appealing like the used to be.
SLS and C63 Saloon are the best looking Mercs at the moment in my opinion.

Agreed.

Looks as though the target customer is likely to have a shaved head and rather too many tattoos...

In fact I'd never even heard of any suggestion that 'nitty gritty' could be considered a racist term until you posted that comment.

From this angle, it has a look of the Maybach Exelero to me.
