The alloys ARE indeed as used by the Jaguar 'D' type and, the MG 'A', I think, the twin cam..
MG B remains one of the very few cars from the 60's to look equally well placed today, now. It has always, for me, been a very handsome little car and I had 3 back in the 70's including a V8.. the V8 was very good, torquey and quick, but..
Frontline has for some time been promoting a conversion for both Midget and the 'B' using a 'K' series motor in various stages of tune. That seemed a likely runner and I have seriously considered it, but this is one stage for me, too far. Over £50k is Cayman money and, well, what kind of loony would do that..?
I fully appreciate that in building or having professionally restored, a 'B' with new shell etc and overhauled or new mechanicals would soon run up a tremendous bill, BUT, it's still a 'B', still old technology, still crippled with wind noise from the rain gutters. Even tho' I do love them, given the money I'd buy a new Cayman or something equally groovy.
What a traitor eh..? tt.
Sorry..

I guess it's aimed at those people that can afford it and want one precisely because it's not a Cayman...

The attention to detail in the build is stunning, more Bentley or Aston than restoring an old rusty old British Leyland offering with an engine swap.

Just my 2p worth obviously!

I think a lot of posters are missing the point. Yes £50K is a lot of money for a BGT but this isn't just a BGT with an MX5 engine. It is a specialist low production car with suspension and drivetrain to make it a decent car.

To develop and build this commercially, costs monay. The end result looks to me to be a competant package, all be it a little dull in appearance.

Maybe if they did this to the old Triumph GT6 then it would be more worthwhile. Although I guess BMW have already done that and called it a Z4 Coupe. They were only as cheap as they were becuse they were built in quantity.

This firm aren't planning on selling these by the shipload so there may be enough buyers.

Now how about a nice modern TR6 - oh BMW have done that and called that a Z4 Roadster. How about a Mini? I think I'll stop there.

I went to the NEC car show to look at Various E Types...as is my passion, when
I saw the LE 50.....WOW what a car. I am from that generation that fell in love with
these cars but could not afford one,I have an E and would love to own a LE50, because
its a car that will give any Porche a run for its money, but at the same time I would
own a period car (that will start every day), with all the refinements of a modern day car.
Hmmmm I wonder if my Bank manager still loves me.

My old MGB had a 200SX engine and running gear with a Hoyle (-esque home made version) IRS and a coilover converted front cross member.

Great fun and cost less than £1,500 all in. wink
£1500 ? A bargain.

If your car had been built professionally with brand new shell, new engine, new suspension and trimmed it using the best materials that one could buy, what would have been the likely cost do you think.

Obviously. If I had a better budget I would have started with a Heritage shell, crate engine, Wisbech Engineering chassis and R W Brockwells custom interior. I'm not taking anything away from the MX5 powered one but it can be done on a much lighter budget.

Has anyone put an Alfa V6 into an MGB? Just keeping my options open for when my 156 crumbles into a heap on the drive...

B GT V6?

I remember a chap was trying to fit an Alfa 75 engine one ages ago. With the GM link to the 156 wouldn't it be easier to get an Omega Ecotec and fit that instead?

The weight advantage the V6 would have over the traditional V8 route (less and further back) would make it very worthwhile.

Point of the Alfa V6 is, well, it looks fab, sounds fab and is a bit of Italy. Plus it's in my 156 at the mo so as I said I am waiting for the tin worm to finish its meal it's a no brainer...

Agreed.

You'd need an adaptor plate for the bell housing on whatever gearbox you use, either cut a chunk out of the sump or run a dry one and custom make a set of engine mounts for the B cross member. Should be fairly straight forward. Best of all it's the age of the shell you need to consider so bin the cat' and all the other eco-crap so the engine can breathe better as well. wink

Had steelies on my '65 BGT back in the day.
Always thought they suited the car more so than wires.
Less fussy.

Ow. For £50k I'd want at least a 425hp V8 not an MX5 engine.
I was expecting that when I clicked on it.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw it was a Mazda engine. Still got 200bhp plus though.

I love the wheels and the colour, but generally I'm not a fan of the MGB.

Totally agree with this. It's gorgeous, but £50k?! Bring on that Giulia GTA rep....

there was such car for sale many years ago in the Netherlands a LHD but with a big V8 out a TVR Griffith, a tuned 4.3 with 300hp biggrin very nice car but they had problems with the rear axle...it could only stand about 3.000 fast km or so and then needs replacement so it needed a better diff/axle but that was for the next owner to find out.
So I then let it go, I had not the extra money nor experience for those extra things to find out, and needed a bit more reliable car...

I've looked into dry sumping the V6 a little. It's a lot of cost, hassle and worth it only if you are running a racing team, I suspect cutting/modifying/reducing the sump to fit and then plumbing in an appropriately sized accusump to make up the difference would be the way to go. Plus it keeps the oil pressure up etc.
