RE: Spotted Special: JDM heroes
Discussion
when the title mentioned fast and furious, i was hoping to see some well specced big power modded cars. I don't know why people run so far from these, if they are done properly by careful enthusiasts they are rarely thrashed, more often they are polished and nurtured - like i said, find the right one, which i thouht they would have spent time doing. ah well.
Almost certainly going Jap next, nowhere near the £12k end that this special goes to though
The Eunos/MX5s are certainly an option as are Glanza's and I've also been window shopping classic shape Impreza Turbo's, MR2s, EG Civics, DC2 Integra's and the ones that are still near the top of my list - s14a Tourings. I guess I'll have to test drive all of them ( ) as I know how different each of them would be to drive. At least I've got a lot of options
Have to say though, I feel there's a distinct difference between a car that's been "modified" and one that's been "molested". I hate generic terms that get misplaced or misused and one has a very different connotation to the other. Yes, sometimes it's a good thing to look out for a car that's in the condition and/or spec it left the factory but sometimes it's not a bad thing to seek something that's been perhaps improved upon. Of course, I suppose this argument falls down depending on what one's perspective of an "improvement" is

I really like the odd ball saloons that wash up on our shores now and then. Toyota Chasers look like awesome fun if they have the 2JZ GTE engine in them from the Supra ...
The Chaser (and Cresta and Mark II) didn't have the 2JZ-GTE from the factory. 1JZ-GTE manual and auto, 2JZ-GE auto.drophead said:
...So far, the only idea I've got is getting a Lexus GS300 and dropping it on some decent coilovers (at a UK friendly ride height I might add!) and adding some Volks all round. Cheaper to insure and dirt cheap to buy as they are still seen as granny cars...
Buy an Aristo, that did have the 2JZ-GTE (before the Supra, in fact - the Supra is just a bitsa, Aristo engine, Soarer chassis ).EDIT:
Oops! Just saw DanDC5's post saying the same thing (but there's no such thing as a Lexus Soarer - Toyota, please ).

£100k or more for a genuine Hakosuka last time I looked at the auctions.
"Hakosuka" was the nickname given to the whole C10-series Skyline range. It's simply a contraction of the Japanese word for 'Box' ( referring to its boxy shape ) and the first two syllables of 'Skyline' in Katakana ( 'Su Ka' ). That means it applies to the cooking short-fronted G15 and G18 four cylinder cars, the wagons/estates and the L20A-engined long nosed sixes as well as the S20 twin-cam engined PGC10 and KPGC10 GT-R models. It's really only the 4-door PGC10s ( 1968~1970 ) and 2-door 'Hard Top' KPGC10s ( 1970~1972 ) that command the super high prices in the C10-series Skyline range.

That's if they ever come through. Most get sold from one private collector to another, they don't like to even give anyone the option of taking them out of Japan.By the way, don't expect an answer from 'thewheelman' about his "February 2012 Hakosuka". Ask him any questions about it and he seems to go all quiet.....

There's a lovely one for sale here: It's really only the 4-door PGC10s ( 1968~1970 ) and 2-door 'Hard Top' KPGC10s ( 1970~1972 ) that command the super high prices in the C10-series Skyline range.

There's no price, but I'm sure we all know the old adage
The JDM car's I'd add to this list;
Evo Vi RS (only the RS models were not available over here unless you got a 6RS11 which was more or less a luxury RS spec Vi)
Evo 9 GT (you might find one for £12k if you are very lucky, should be closer to £15k)
Impreza S202 - first Spec C but with better suspension set up - no offical name just called a Subaru S202
RX7 late model turbo
Civic Type R FD2 4 door post 2008 (still closer to £15k) the proper type R late model Civic with lsd, more power, better handling

Old man just got an Impreza Turbo as a sub whilst restoring his daily. Get used to foil light doors and crap interiors quick! The step down in very noticeable, and he was coming from a Clio. For something to feel flimsy/cheap* next to a Clio is an achievement of sorts.... Bit of a MILF magnet as kids seem to love them.

[pedant] There was actually no Subaru badging on them, they were an STi S202 - possibly because of being outside the 'honourable manufacturers agreement' power limit. Special edition based on the Ver.7 RA Spec-C with all sorts of STi goodies [/pedant]Love the S204 and S401 as well, but the S201 and 203 never seemed as impressive.

I know i had an S202 after my 2003 spec C.S201 and 203 never seemed as impressive.
I have just invested in a Legacy GT-B manual from the classifieds for an absolute bargain of £800.It is in very healthy condition and seemed pretty rapid. Today out of curiosity had a head to head with a friend in his E46 M3 manual. We went from 4000 rpm in second gear side by side up to 130 mph and the M3 only pulled a cars length !!( on a private runway of course)
Its as good as i always thought/hoped they would be.
And i used it to pick up my Christmas tree, try that in your M3!!!

Yeah I'm under no illusions as to how bad Jap interiors can be, though considering my Dad has a history of Lada's and I learnt to drive in an Uno, my aspirations are set rather low. My current Stilo does have the modern touch of soft plastics but counters this with the classic creaks and rattles normally associated with the Italian brand Bit of a MILF magnet as kids seem to love them.

A mate's Mrs has a hawk-eye WRX and it's really solid with fair miles and around 4 years under the belt. I'd just prefer the added rawness and looks of the original even if Action Man plastics and tinfoil panels are supplied as standard Would like an STi for the uprated parts but don't think my hypothetical budget would quite stretch to it. More in-depth investigations need to be made It's the sound of the flat-four that really does it for me. I've loved it since the first time I heard them in the early 90's when I watched McRae hurling a Legacy (which I also wouldn't mind) around/over/through various British forests
I've had the journalistic dream for a few years. Trouble is my degree included journalism but wasn't specifically geared to that area. Coupled with a lack of hands-on experience in the field, my chances of writing for a magazine or newspaper of any quality or distribution are somewhat negligible at best. Always up for improving my skills and I do try my utmost on the mechanical side but unfortunately this practical side of me is still somewhat lacking. This is when mate's rates come in handy

Buying thanks very much, & no where near £100k, but plenty more than £12k, but retro jap car at it's best. Oh......& before the "experts" pipe up, it's a spotless example.
[so-called Expert]A spotless example of what, though? You keep saying you've bought a "Hakosuka", but what model...?[/so-called Expert]Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
