RE: PH Blog: V8 = v. good

v8s are great, recently sold my 2006 RS4 cab which has been my best car to drive to date!! (and ive had a few) lol needed more space so bought a 2006 Audi S6 5.2 v10 (with full miltec exhaust) sounds unbelievable!!!!! amazing car to drive and worth every penny it costs on fuel consumption etc...
you only live once so may as well enjoy it!!!!!

I recently bought a twin-turbo V6 estate, can I join in too? It's got rubbish fuel consumption and everythingg!
I did the same recently, An A6 2.7T Quattro Avant Tip Auto Though i'd love a V8! But in the BMW variety, VAG Quattro drive is all very well for traction but dull dead steering and a chasis that can't string a set of corners into a nice flowing rythm does not make for the most entertaining drive.....;)But since i'm coping well with an avg of 25ish mpg quite admirably i think i'm nearly ready to graduate to some V8 goodness!!! E39 M5 in dark grey please!
Love the V8s...
Currently own two: Range Rover Classic 3.9 V8 and a Mercedes W140 S500 L.
Both make a fantastic sound, but both have totally different characteristics.
Had various ones in the past from W126 500SELs, Jaguar XJ8, BMW E38 730i V8, BMW E34 540i V8 Touring.
Everyone needs a V8 in their life at some point.

I've watched your videos on YouTube and I have a small savings pot that gets topped up as and when I can with the intention of having one fitted in the near future. I've had the green light from SWMBO which is always a bonus.....
Lucky you, I got ear ache about it even though I had been planning it ever since I first got the car in 2004 and that was about 6 months before I met the Mrs. I love the sound and the power delivery of the V8 type engine, first one I had was a Rover 3500 SD1, but the first I drove was a Daimler 2.8 V8 the SD1 was next and after that it was a Stonefield P5000 4x4 with a Chrysler 5.2l V8 and I had 3 of those, last one was fitted with a 6.2l GMC V8 diesel from a army Hummer after that it was the ZT then the RRS with the 3.6 TDV8.

I've heard them all of my friends - "what about the cost of the fuel" - "You pay how much tax!" - "It will be worth buttons when you come to sell it". Funny though how they always seem to hang about when I pull off, encouraging me to nail it
It what was funny buying the car though (XKR). I had a 335i BMW, and when discussing the part exchange, the Jaguar dealer said, and I am being completely straight here "Well the problem is that there is no demand for large petrol engined cars at the moment ....."
"Really ...... " I replied, "Like a large V8 for example?"
"Hmmm ..." he said "I have been selling Jags for 15 years and I don't think I have ever said something quite that stupid" Lol

I've got a Porsche 928 S4 weekend car that must have one of the best V8 sound tracks ever.
Sounds like an old fashioned American muscle car at tick-over and low revs - thanks in part to it's x-pipes and RMB and a Nascar at the upper reaches of rev range when the "flappy" valve opens in the inlet manifold.
It's even reasonably good on fuel at 18-21 MPG depending on journey type. Considering I get 25-26MPG from my 330ci Cab DD it's not that bad really. But that's missing the point really!
Through the Hindhead tunnel on the way to GWR this year in 2nd gear (helps with average speed check, honest) made the Dino that entered at the same time sound a bit ordinary.
If it were a singer it would be Alyson Moyet. Not the best thing to look at and you wouldn't admit to lusting after it but the noise is quite awesome!
I'm thinking mid-90's Bentley Turbo R / Brooklands with LPG as a new DD - Too ostentatious for these parsimonious times?

I love the V8 burble from the aston... and have now got used to 16mpg motorway/london averages (and am good mates with the guys in the local shell - though that has now become a "mini" waitrose so can now attribute my large credit card bills on fuel to grocery shopping... lessens the mental blow)... am very tempted replacing the estate with something with a v8... maybe an audi??
Onto my second v8 and the third one in the pipeline. There is something rather appealing about the sensation of this configuration. As a barge mover, I find it slows the world down a bit, tones down the bling of a brash world and leaves a pleasing feeling of calm. As a loud car, there are few things more pleasing than a v8 at work, particularly the American v8's that seem to make the perfect mechanical noise.
My old S8 with Milltek cat-back. Video doesn't really do it justice though

We owe a lot to Henry Ford for the V8, of course he didn't invent it, but he did get it into mass production, by developing a V8 block which could be cast in one piece. His experts said it was 'impossible' but he told them to do it anyway! Something like that anyway, I'm sure an expert will fill in the gaps/ correct me!
Yes MyM8V8, the yanks make some good ones. I have spent a bit of time behind a GM 327, & loved every minute of it.
To be fair I suppose you would have to call my favourite, the Rover V8 a yank engine too.
However it was at it's best when Ozzie firm Repco developed their own OHC heads for it, & produced the 3.0L that was 3 times F1 world championship winner. The Oz version of that engine was a 2.5L, revving to 9,700 RPM, which produced a sound every bit as good as the best today. It was a deeper mechanical screech than todays racing engines.
Eliot doesn't believe the power we are getting out of our 4.6L version in my TR8, but perhaps he has no knowledge of the recently available after market heads for this engine, & what they are producing.
The sound of this engine is something else. Just idling around a car park, it sounds like a very powerful 7.0L. I have had people wait around until I came back to the car & started it, as they could not believe that sound had come from "that little thing", as they put it.

the only thing I don't like about my RRTDV8 is the fact that it is too economical for a RR..I should have got a proper V8 petrol supercharged..however my other two cars are 6 cylinders so I think that just about makes up for the Diesel..
for the most part succesful, interesting, generous and gregarious people drive V8s..I generally don't have much time for joyless people who drive your average Diesel/Eco engine..the kind of people who get their calculators out when the bill comes round in a restaurant!..
the above comment is off the cuff and tongue in cheek, I do not wish to offend all the miserly un-interesting people out there!..
Happy New Year
