I've only ever gotten to 196mph unfortunately, and I was a passenger.

Ian: A chap, Zarih Rana, here (owns ZR Auto)in Alberta Canada organized an event last summer called "Race the Base" Youtube Race the Base and if you do a search also on `targa 2011 Enzo crash`you can watch the same person take his Enzo for a wash in the Atlantic Ocean. (We are hearing $100,000 damage.) The Race the Base event was to be a 1 time thing but it sounds like it may happen again in 2012. Cars were allowed on the runway (after safety checks) where our F-18s train. He got to race his Enzo against one of the planes. It was a good event and lots of money collected for good causes. (I wanted to take my V8 TVR Taimar but the exotics don`t get the `Corvette flutter/lift that I get over 110 MPH and with my car being a TVR it "sweats", so I don't know if they would have liked oil on the runway. There is also a place in Texas and of course the Salt Flats.

Added: I have had my 347 stroker up to 130(top end of speedo) twice now and both times were "Brown Stripe Moments". All the best to you on your wishes in the new year.

New Year, New Challenge - To do 200 mph.

Sounds easy but the more i've been considering how to do it, the more of a challenge i realise it is.

Car capable of achieving 200 mph in the real world + suitable location both pose some problems.

Does anyone know of any driving experiences, either in the UK or abroad, where you can fulfill such an ambition?

Anybody who's driven a BMW E60/E62/E63 at very high speed will tell you they are a very good bet, in terms of vehicle, for what you are trying to achieve.

I've driven lots of stuff, New Nissan GT-R, Gallardo, 360CS, TVR's, Porsche 997... I used to own an E62 M6, unmodified, derestricted.

Driving home one night, in the early hours on a clear, dry M40 northbound, I decided to see if it could do what the book said. Answer? It can.

I can't think of a better car to do those kinds of speeds in, they weigh a ton, so they're stable, and 500bhp is more than enough given a couple of miles. Granted an E60 will set you back a few quid, but as somebody pointed out, you can always sell it afterwards.

The tricky part is environment. Hard to find a straight on a UK track long enough, plenty of very long straights on UK motorways, M1, M40, however, I really wouldn't recommend doing it on a motorway, even on an empty motorway there are dangerous variables. I know that bikes have hit 195mph from a standing start down the two mile(ish) straight at Snetterton, but probably not long enough to get a barge doing anywhere near even with a run at it.

Personally, I understand why you want to put a tick in the 200mph box, but ultimately it's just a lot of wind, a lot of money, and a lot of things that could go wrong. It's not something I intend to repeat anyway...

Actually, they weigh about two tonnes.

Agreed, there are thousands of very cheap cars that can do 120mph all day if you want autobahn-cruising speeds, and if you really want a feeling of 'fast', hitting 200mph in a car on a straight piece of tarmac isn't really the best way to go at it.

Want to experience new meanings of fast for a reasonable budget? Get yourself a passenger drive in a GT3RS or the like, or pick up biking and get yourself a 600cc or litre racing bike and be prepared to be blown away.

My current preferred option is to hire an LP640 for the next Vmax.

There seem to be a number of companies that offer LP640's from £850 per day but i haven't looked at their T&C's yet!

I wouldn't think it'd get anywhere near 200 TBH, 260bhp isn't enough.

Silly idear, something goes wrong or you stuff it.... You'll have a 160k bill + legal costs sitting on your door step. If its that bad you'll probably be tried for Breach of contract/legally signed agreements (won't be much they can do but they sure as hell would try if you crashed or broke their Lamborghini on private land where insurance doesn't cover the like)

Bogo 172bhp hayabusa will do 186mph. If that's limited or runs out of revs I don't know.

Oh yeah a Sapphire Cosworth i think, IIRC they rebuilt gearbox and clutch twice on esprit then bigger turbos etc, was around 15K of mods then bought esprit as well, was about 30K in all

Limited, same as my ZX12r.
ZX12r is only limited in 6th gear though, 5th will indicate 190mph allegedlywhistle
A1 model(the first year model)has not got any restriction though and I have seen genuine low 190s recorded for them as they are able to use 6th gear to the full.

You wouldn't even need something to go wrong, if everything went perfectly I strongly suspect you'd still find you'd be in big trouble afterwards due to the black box!

There was an interesting thread on here about a guy trying to buy and tune a Mazda RX7 to get to 200mph for £10k, I think he got fairly close until the car was written off in a crash and he had to start again.

I've only done approx 140mph on a motorway in Europe once and that was pretty hairy, so another 60mph must be pretty crazy.

Here's a guy doing it in his M6, not sure if it's at dawn or dusk.
