I really enjoy my B6 Avant.

Yes, the gearing is short so it drinks a bit. The flipside of that is that on the motorway a quick flex of the ankle gets you past most things.

I get a hint of rattle on startup, I've not noticed it drink any oil (76k miles) and it's a lovely place to cover the miles in comfort.

Back in December I took it on a trackday at Bedford. It was as quick as someone else in an E36 M3 Evo, albeit it was a big understeering boat.

But, for what it is - which is a quick, practical estate car that requires minimal maintenance - it's great. I had a BMW 540i/6 estate before it, and this is by far the better car.

I get 20mpg around the doors, and 25 on a run. Coming from an XJR they're incredible figures, so I'm a happy bunny!

Would love an S4, but can't justify spending that sort of cash on a car that'd rarely get used. When I do use it, it'd be a 5 minute 1 mile journey to work, which would cause catastrophic economy and engine wear.
Surely you walk to work eek

The only downer with these cars is the gearing, the manual cruises at 3.3-5rpm and as a result loves a drink, its one car where the auto is better on mpg and will cruise at 1.5rpm.
What speed is 3.5k rpm in 6th ?.
Checked my 2.0T and 85 is under 3K rpm.

That does seem strangely high for a V8

Hi This is my first post-be gentle.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I will be looking for a B6 S4 V8 shortly. I know some of the issues people have with the cam chain rattle and high thirst for super octane and all the points in the previous replies are helpful and has given me food for thought...

It has not dis-swayed me from wanting one. If anyone has a 4 door or Avant they are looking to sell around Xmas please give me a shout...Thanks.

1 post, 88 months? Good lurking.

Anyway, people routinely resurrect threads on here from the early 00's so I'd not worry about it.
