Forgive me my cynicism but I doubt very much Chris H. would drive around in a new passat unless VW loaned him one!!!! I recall Chris twittering recently that the Golf GTI was all the car you'd ever need so surely he'd pick a GTI over a Passat.....(and/or any sponsorship by VW should be declared.....;) ) Surely a 5 door DSG GTI covers a lot more bases....

That's BS to be frank - anyone who appreciates the engineering in a performance car should appreciate what goes into the best of today's pushbikes. And I can assure you that 60mph down the side of any of the big mountains in France or Spain is just as much a rush as driving at twice that speed. Likewise 35 to 40mph in a bunch of thirty or forty riders all gunning for the line at the end of a race.
Anyway, great feature and back on topic - E62 M3 makes a pretty decent stab at the one car thing - fits bike in boot, four people (ok not with bike in boot) bloody quick but refined when you need it.
Soon to replace my 996 Turbo precisely because I don't have the space for a two car solution. If I did, it would probably be a W123 Merc plus a Seven - Monday to Friday commute on the bike renders the fuel economy issue irrelevant.

Sums up my Vectra exactly. I really don't like it and never could but I really respect it for being perfectly engineered* for shuffling reps about the country efficiently on a tight budget. - By engineered I mean fit for purpose as opposed to "quality". Having said that it's held together fairly well considering what I do to it...

If your situation means you can afford to spend your hard-earned on the family AND have enough spare to buy yourself a toy - well fair play and well-done. I'm not quite there yet though so the Passat stays and costs me very little.

We rented a 1.6 diesel Passat bluemotion about 2 years ago. Frankly the only things I didn't like about it was the length and the electric parking brake. It went so well that I had a hard time believing that it was only a 1.6! It was super spacious,very comfortable and handled well. We averaged well over 60mpg without trying. As much as it pains me, I also fit this bill having tried the formula on a couple of occasions. I've now resigned to having one quality, reasonably involving daily driver to try and appease the dilemma and it's just about working...

You have to work it though.I have previously joined hoons in the Passat!
