Audi cancels understeering, overengined estate car in favour of slightly larger understeering, overengined estate car. Woot.
Driven one? I'd call an RS4 a lot of things, but understeery isn't one of them. Also, no car can be over engined. Ever.

I reckon there will be an rs4, they have sold so many and the rs4 historically has such a solid reputation that it would be a stupid business decision not too,

only reason against that I can think off is more competition compared to 8 years ago, apart from amg/m3 you also have cars like the lexus ISF, even Audi themselves are producing so many more new 's' and 'rs' models nowadays

I would have thought the market for RS4 is larger than RS6??

I always wondered, before the A4's arrival, why Audi didnt have a coupe version of the RS4.
Bmw only ever made a 4 door M3 in the E90 range and tbh, it's hideous. If they dont make a 4 door in the F30 range then no real need for Audi to make an RS4, just stick with the RS5 instead.
Only trouble there is that the RS5 is cack!

The RS5 is a fine car in the grand scheme of things. But not my cuppa tea.

The C6 RS6 is one of the best "do-everything" all-round petrolhead's road car there is... and here's the important bit... as long as you have a separate "exciting" car in the garage.
Here's why I voted for one with my hard earned:
- It comfortably fits the family and all luggage in it (RS4 is too small)
- It's not too noisy for the neighbours (unlike AMG)
- It's got an excellent user-friendly gearbox (unlike M5)
- Clients don't think you're wasting their money (they just think it's an Audi estate)
- It's got 4WD for wintery sure-footedness
- You can have a bit of fun if or when the circumstances are right
- It has a great "harrrumph" noise between gearchanges
- The V10 howls nicely at high revs
- It's nice and heavy, live driving a Eurostar, and not blown about by winds on motorways (and I usually hate heavy cars)
- The wife can drive it easily
- It's not a visceral drive (otherwise it would spoil the weekend toys)

YMMV, but that's several of my reasons, and I could't think of anything else that would do a better job of all the above.

But saying that, I hope they bring out a new RS4 instead, not only to add more diversity to the world, but also because the C6 RS6 is still new-ish and probably isn't ready for replacement yet.

The current 911 has a moustache, if that's any help.

I think the current S4 could also be part of the problem - it is too close to what the RS4 would be and is one heck of a underrated car. The RS5 and RS3 might be faster but the S4 seems to be the only one (R8 and to a lesser extent TTRS excepted) which has anything like the dynamics and entertainment of the old RS4. If a new RS4 drives, handles and rides like the current RS5, it'll be panned. It needs to be like the current S4 but turned up to 11 which is a tough ask IMHO.

Oh and of course the S4 is available with a rather nice manual gearbox smile
I have had an S4 for about 18 months and 13k miles (and have had 5 Audi A4 Quattros inc the first RS4) IMHO the S4 is dynamically not brilliant in any of its various modes, despite mine having the e-diff and all the options that are supposed to make it handle better ticked. 4 wheel drive biased to the front results in understeer and you just have to deal with that. You can drive insanely quickly on less than perfect surfaces though. And the 7 speed paddle is the first non-manual I have ever had, and it's great.

I decided before xmas not to order a C63 AMG to replace it because I wanted to see the new RS4 first. Hopefully Audi will make their intentions clear as soon as possble, I can't be the only long standing customer who is irritated by this uncertainty. I need a fast estate to transport my dogs, they are speed freaks.
