I can't stand that old Merc I have to say. The cruise stalk looks a nightmare (buttons on the wheel ftw) and it just looks on its last legs to me. (I realise it probably isn't!)
The cruise control stalk is an ergonomic triumph. Up to go faster; down to go slower; away to knock off; in to resume. It is by far the easiest and safest system I have ever come across and far superior to buttons on the wheel because it is intuitive and it can be operated without taking your eyes off the road. They've been doing it this way for over 40 years for a reason...
Toyota/Lexus used a very similar system for cruise control (or "automatic drive" as they originally called it) - cruise on/off button on the end of the stalk, down to set or reduce cruise speed, pull to suspend, up to resume or increase cruise speed. Very easy to use.
In a similar vein, the E32 Seven's stalk set-up for cruise is much more intuitive to use than the multi-buttons on the steering wheel too.

The other feature that Mercs have is you can set a speed limit above which the car won't let you drive, handy for roadworks with average speed cameras.

I had been unaware of that when on my first CL outing to Germany. Ran into the LIM at around 120mph or so and thought I had damaged the engine! Co-pilot flicks through the manual and recommended shifting down a gear (which I thankfully ignored!) But eventually issue was identified and increased to maximum schnell speed at each opportunity.

The petrol stations absoluely LOVED us on that trip!
Kickdown over-rides the limiter on my SL500.

Its the same as the E34, does work well but I find no issues with the buttons tbh.

The buttons work fine, I just prefer the stalk. It also feels slightly more responsive/quicker-acting with the electronic throttled V12 than the cable throttled sixes too.

Thoughts? I am finding this very hard to resist.

I know, the wheel trims are wrong. But the antenna is correct, being a dealer fit job and not factory.

I've bought a car from the guy selling this Merc.
He's a proper gent, was a most pleasant buying experience.

I have just received an unexpectedly large bill which might put paid to this lovely 300 TE for a while.

How curious. I was stabbing on the accelerator, even pressing down on the 'detent' at the end of travel and to no avail.

No matter.....I dutifully took it back to its rightful home and let it run free! Even if the credit card was hammered on fuel!

You can set a "hard" limiter, presumably for when the vehicle is (1) equipped with winter tyres with a speed rating lower than its maximum speed or (2) on loan to your son. I can't remember how you do this.

Ineteresting, on the Seven you can only set a "bong" to sound at a particular speed.

I quite like the moody-looking front end and the engine/wheelbase combo is all good.

However some of you eagle-eyed beardists may however have noticed that it's clearly a fking shed.

And the horrible GB sticker.

Given the price, it was doing well enough until:

That interior combo always ends up looking a bit manky to me. Well priced otherwise though for a sub 100k 1 owner Touring.
