I'd have gone for a poke round for you if I knew it was in Taunton. That 540i does seem a bit of a cracker, but the "lumpy gearbox" is slightly off-putting (albeit probably not so much of an issue to replace if things went really tits up.)

.... Nice looking proper car ! I'd imagine the current owner has fitted the M3 SMG steering wheel - its a popular mod - and those M5 mirrors.

Apache said: Been drawn towards the Legacy, what do they go like? I hear they need servicing often and like a tipple A little late to the reply but no-one else has, so - they go very very nicely, the engine is a peach - pulls hard and smooth all the way to the 7k rpm red line. It is impressive. Great noise too, especially with Prodrive backboxes. A bit smaller than a proper barge, the boot on the estate is not as cavernous as I thought it might be, and the driver's seat is comfy, but not give the impression of space. I drove a 136k miles example and a 50k one - the interior is not the last word in quality feel but it wears very well indeed, from comparing the two. Steering is very light, and I didn't get on with the gear shift (Impreza box in the Spec B) but I'm sure that's a matter of taste. Does drink though - permanent 4wd means lots of transmission losses, so 25mpg average on a good day, 30 on a motorway run is achievable according to previous owners. Can't speak for servicing intervals, but it didn't seem that cheap to be done when I had a quick search. HTH

for f k sake chaps. why oh why did you have to do it. i primarily blame hornet rider in this. i'm in love with barges now. what happened to the me who used to love smaller 4 seater coupes with manual boxes like the 135i? i'm now 100% convinced my next car will be an E65, either a 745i or 750i, heck....i would even like an Li model. that hasn't been helped by various people saying they basically blow the E38 into the weeds for comfort, refinement, handling etc. i'm going to start saving now you guys have ruined me for the rest of my life!!!
