They're all potentially ruinous.

Avoid that 728i, torque converter was slipping.
So it needs around £2k on it!

Though I'm not sure of anything on a contemporary 7 Series or S Class that could throw a bill as large as the A8 gearbox (particularly the 4 speed), or is as apt to fail (save for perhaps a rusted fuel tank on the E38). Or are they not as bad as has been made out? You still see plenty around...

Is it really £2k for a torque convertor rebuild? Had heard just the torque converter was closer to £500ish?

On Ferry back from the N24 with the 740i or Sieben as she is now known. Overall shes been superb, cruising about 150mph and sticking with a fiesty 928 S4 most of the weekend.
2 instances of Bork to report, a spring in the boot catch snapped and a hose at the top of the engine let go (oddly the car was being driven sedately, other than the autobahn she was rarely extended)
The boot is taped and a hose was constructed from scraped hoses (no replacement available on a Saturday in rural Germany)
Been really, really impressed. The ring to the ferry was a non-stop cruise and I'm still fresh. Body control in the mountains amazing and all commented on how comfy she was. 1000 miles and 6 days into barge ownership and I'm a happy boy. Circa 25mpg overall for the trip

Or are they not as bad as has been made out? You still see plenty around... E38, E31, E39, XK8, Range Rovers, Z8 Alpina all used the same ZF gearbox, so the A8 is no more or less likely than the others to empty your wallet, they are all just waiting to dry hump your wallet

The later 5 speeds are apparently a bit more robust. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8

Not that they're entirely borkfrei, but they're a different version of similar 'boxes, the 5HP19 is another widely used in the same period in more different applications and E38s alone used both of those plus the 5HP30. .
