What do you put that down to?

Been a fantastic month/quarter for us. Since the start of January our new car sales have been pretty phenomenal, especially compared to the last 18months or so. Used has been slow, but we have still managed to get a good chunk of 2-3year old stock away, its the Ex-Demo less than a year old stock that we are struggling with at present.
We have went quiet over the last couple of weeks though. I was gutted yesterday, had a couple come in Friday night just before closing and worked out a deal on a new Astra. Explained the situation with the end of the quarter etc. and that the car carried a £1,000 discount which would expire if the car was not registered by the 31st. They still wanted the night to think about it (which is fine), however I explained that the latest they would have on the Saturday to decide (due to taxing etc) would be 10:30am. Sods law they phoned and said they wouldn't be in until 11:30am, very tight but still do-able, they eventually came in at half 12, took a 30minute test drive and came back saying they would buy it (by this time it was after 1pm), went to tax the car and there was an issue on AFRL, and the Vauxhall AFRL help desk closed at 1pm. If only they had came in on time.
Gutting, but at the same time it serves them right. Annoys me when people mess around like that, they think you're just giving them the patter about time limits etc.

What did they say??

I am sure that some of the more unsavoury dealers are not adverse to applying this kind of pressure when it is not truly there.
The sad fact of the matter is the few tarnish the reputations of the many in most walks of life.

They were a bit disgruntled, but they did get the point that the time limits they were given were for a genuine reason and not some B/S to get a sale.

However, fair play to Vauxhall, after some calls etc. this morning to several people they are honouring the deal (the problem had been that although we pulled the car in from VSC the car had previously been at another dealer and some background AFRL stuff had not been done which caused the problem). So thankfully I now have a happy customer after all that.

Apparently they don't want to sell cars. Two callback requests from the website to different dealers and all I got was a customer service call who told me that I needed someone from used cars (thats what I requested!) and still nothing.

My experience of the dealerships isn't great either. I've bought two new from them and both were through people I'd been put onto rather than from a straight phone call enquiry.

Parts and service seem better than sales though.

I'm curious on a 250.

Is the good month a combination of new reg's and good finance deals?

Seems that new sales were very good and used not so.

Do you think punters are more confident re. the economy or is it mainly company car sales?

Really enjoying reading this thread....Can someone in car sales give me some advice.

I don't want to be a time waster - especialy after reading here how hard a lot of you guys work.

I am interested in later this summer or perhaps in the autumn bying a new car.

It is sort of narrowed down to 3 cars - based on nothing more than brochures etc.

I now want to look at the cars on my list. No test drive yet. Just go along sit inside see if the back seat/boot/glove box et is big enough. If a test drive is offered, great but I won't be buying that day.

Tyre kicking? Perhaps one view. Or early stage pre-purchase research. Its a lot of money involved and I like to take my time.

So, what is the best approach with a dealer? I want to know more about the cars before narrowing down my list. I want to chat to someone who can show me how things work etc. Sure I can look it up in a brochure, but I want to get in, feel the quality, or lack of it etc. What looks OK online or in a brochure can turn out to be badly bult tat etc.

Also a good opportunity to make decisions about a dealer. I met a salesman once a few years ago when I was at the just looking stage. I liked the way he conducted himself and the way he presented the product. A couple of months later we did a deal.

I have always done this but bearing in mind what I have read on here, I would like to get the best out of my visit without wasting someone's valuable time.

I'm Renault smile

I always respond to leads, don't get a great deal of business off them though hence some people don't bother.

I was enquiring about the Renault Retail Vouchers. Looks like a good deal for someone going down the finance route anyway - I'm not yet sold on £8k depreciation though (for any car)! Or keeping a car for 3 years.

£3k off and £140/month do sound nice though.

As a punter who's done much the same recently, I do the following.
- call up, speak to a salesman.
- state from the off that I'm after seeing what ever car hands on and to ask some questions/get an idea on prices etc.
- Arrange a time during a weekday, not at lunch time. This is going to be the quietest time for them so will mean you get their attention.
- Go see the car! If you like it, then book in a test drive there for another time.
