Cool,
Thanks guys.
Are re-maps expensive? i have a 1.5 dci Scenic (53 plate) if it helps to provide a ball-park figure?
I take it it's not something you have done down your local garage?
S
To be honest its a st car and after a remap it will still be a st carThanks guys.

We can't all afford posh, flash motors and it serves its purpose - more importantly I'm happy with it.
Thin, thanks for your idea - I do like it, but an answer best used in another thread, me thinks.
Back to the tuning boxes - so if all they do is con the system into putting more fuel in, how can that improve economy - more power, less throttleto achieve same speed, that kind of thing? So why don't they set them up like that from the factory?
Do remaps provide better economy that a tuning box, or do they just it a safer, more refined way?
Thanks for the posts, most () of which have been very informative, and contradictory to boot
S
The theory behind remaps giving better economy is that for a given speed you are having to use less fuel as engine performance is optimised resulting in more output for the same amount of fuel pre-remap. Whether this is factual or not, I don't know (or really care).
I paid £275 for my remap in 2006 and I got +40BHP/80NM (rolling road verified) on my 330d.
I wouldn't have a tuning box unless it was less than £100 and it was to be fitted to a banger that I didn't care about.

like someone said before all the tuning boxes do is let in more fuel and they don't do anything for economy i think they piggy back on the injector loom as i was going to get a psi one for my 306 hdi, a full remap will give you better fuel economy depending on your right foot working on the principles of fueling and ignition tables
I had a tuning box on my Freelander Td4 and it was a disaster.
Yes, it significantly improved mid-range torque and was a doddle to fit but it also increased smoke massively and led to collapsing air hoses from the intake if I remember rightly. Luckily it had an extended warranty so I cheekily whipped the box off before phoning LR.
£680 quid bill avoided. Naughty but I couldn't afford to pay that at the time. I should have got a proper re-map but just decided to play safe and put up with the dismal performance as in all other respects it was a good car.
I had a proper re-map on my mkV golf GTi which was fantastic, money well spent so even on a cheap car I wouldn't bother with a box that just tricks the engine into over-fuelling.

The most awful service ever experienced in UK!
After a meticulous research online I have decided to order a kit and book an appointment at (a certain tuning company) in Chelmsford. I have also taken my Mini Cooper S for a full service i.e. full oil service and tyres replacement, in order to make sure all was good in terms of safety and that the car was actually ready for the tuning box. Service cost me about £600. On Thursday 26 January I was driving from London to Chelmsford to have the job done. First impression was good, and (the), marketing manager at (a certain tuning company), seemed to be quite prepared and expert on the subject, he was answering all queries in a convincing way. When I asked if there was any danger or risk of damage to the vehicle, (he) said no risk whatsoever.
And anyway the process was fully reversible so just in case by disconnecting the device all mechanical and technical specs would have immediately reset to manufacturing conditions.
(He) knew that I was due to drive to Italy on that car next Monday 30 January.
To cut story short soon they put the kit and I went for test drive that was ok. I paid and left. When reaching the motorway the car developed a major fault, engine service light flashed and 2 out 4 cilinders only were firing. Car accused lack of power and became almost undrivable. I was lucky to make it back to Chelmsford safe. At (a certain tuning company) they wanted to resolve by taking all off the car, letting me going for my long drive trip to Italy and post the box to me after software correction. Naturally I have asked to have the thing removed and claimed a full refund. They agreed. I got a refund even if not yet in my account but the service light and damage to the car had not been resolved. They didn't know what to do. Car remained undrivable. And the only thing they could say, after contacting a manager who has not even had the "pleasure" to talk to me was they do not take any responsibility. I have been told to take car for service and pay for repair. They have also tried to produce an invoice according to what I had actually just collected the box without had that installed by their mechanic.
Basically they didn't provide any after sales support. They had no idea of what had happened.
They have no manners, they don't seem like knowing what they are actually doing...
And after almost a week I am still waiting for a call from a certain (person)...supposed to be the manager there, who has been "apparently" unable to talk to me since.
Repairing the car cost me £200, had to replace the 4 sparks and a coil that an electrical shock had blown up.
Had to rearrange my trip which cost me £100.
Guys don't be "silly" like me in trusting those people who will possibly damage your car. Rather get a proper ecu remapping by a reputable dealer instead.
Thanks for reading.

Was seriously thinking about one of these .... but after reading that post I think I'll give it a miss.
I've used them for literally decades. First one was on a 1999 Passat 1.9 TDI.Most recently on my sons 120D M Sport to great effect.
Never had any issues.
Use a reputable company with a proven track record.
Had a DTUK box on a GTD and had no problems whatsoever. They are more expensive than some of the others but I would hope that's for good reason.
I wouldn't have a diesel without one. Made the car thoroughly more enjoyable for very little outlay compared to petrol Na tuning!
I will say I had my previous vRS 'mapped' by Shark. They did a good job. Personally I prefered the tuning box as it was easy to remove and I sold it when I returned the (leased ) Golf
