....I still can't see the point in this car other than being a rich man's indulgence.
I think you've answered your own question!Mrs Streetrod has decided one of these would be ideal for the school run

The old V8 turbo diesel however, gets you the best of boths worlds. 300+ ponies and 500ft+ of torque. I love ours
A V8 turbo petrol would get similar figures no? Just not on the mpg front. It wouldn't sound like the firing order is derived from numbers picked out of a hat either......But I suspect your wallet would end up a little fatter than mine at the end of the day.Just cannot get on with the looks of the M-Class, every edition has been too American looking in my opinion and this continues that trend. Looks rather ghastly, I much prefer the relatively less-bling more utilitarian look of the G-Wagon. It has the same big stick power but seems less shouty somehow.

I like it! If money were no object, I would include one in my garage. However...

A bit like G Class then. Saw one just a day ago.
...in the real world, it would be the G Class LWB with the larger diesel lump for me. I mean, if you want big, this is HUGE and enough oomph to waft about in all conditions. One day - and not dependent on a lottery win.Not just relating to this vehicle but a lot of the 4x4s in general. Why are they so ludicrously heavy?
I know that for some of the manufacturers these are great money spinning cars often with rather primitive engineering, but surely the time has now come for them to look to reduce the weight rather than just bolt on bigger engines. I know that this is a more expensive option, but it would really improve the breed long term. 2 tonnes should probably be the goal!
Though they can still give us the same engines......

You've just identified the point then. Is there anything wrong with a car being a rich man's indulgence? If money was no object, I certainly wouldn't want to drive a diesel because it gets better mpg, I'd want the fastest, biggest engined, most powerful car in the range of whatever car I was buying.I have been lurking about on Pistonheads for ages, but for the first time I feel complelled to reply to a topic thread.
I have one of these "stupid" 4x4 things, I take 4 adults to and from work in a rural location 5 days a week, through snow, ice and flooding. I run my sons football team and take him, other players and all the kit here there and everywhere. Me and the family bike, both road and mountain, the bikes and all the equipment fits very nicely. Can you please tell me what else would do this?
On top of all that I love cars and I love something a bit different. I have had so many different cars its silly, and none have elicited the sort of attention this has when you put the foot down, a friend of mine who is a TVR club member said "your house should not be able to go this fast!!"
25mpg is hardly great, but drive something souless if you want thats up to you, I love my 5 litre V10 and until you try one of these things please dont dismiss them!!

It's an absolute dog ! Complete waste of time and effort on MBs part.
23.9 MPG manufacturers figures ? Make that about 18 then !
Almost 300 CO2 per KM ? My incinerator's more efficient !
On the road, you can't see past 'em, you can't see through 'em, and you can't see underneath 'em, just the most selfish things on the road, the whole gang of them, from Cayenne to Toerag to Frontera.
The only bloke to buy one will be Richard Head.
Eugh!!!

Someone explain the point of cars like this?
They are ridiculously expensive to buy, cost a fortune to run, depreciate like a stone, you can't use more than a fraction of the performance on the road, but aren't exactly any good as occassional track day toys and the diesel version would make a much better job of being a workhorse... they just seem utterly pointless unless you're a footballer or live somewhere petrol costs peanuts (eg; Middle East).
Errr. But couldn't you throw a lot of those accusations at many cars? They are ridiculously expensive to buy, cost a fortune to run, depreciate like a stone, you can't use more than a fraction of the performance on the road, but aren't exactly any good as occassional track day toys and the diesel version would make a much better job of being a workhorse... they just seem utterly pointless unless you're a footballer or live somewhere petrol costs peanuts (eg; Middle East).
For those who can only own one car that needs to serve many purposes then it ticks a huge number of boxes.
I love it
