Are most of the reliability issues covered under a decent warranty? I would probably take one out against a higher value car.

Anyone know if a bought warranty is worth it? Will it cover the common reliability issues?

Also, any recommendations for a rival/alternative to the 330i/330d touring?

It's FWD but the V50 D5 Volvo is a good un. So is the T5 (rapid too)
Then there's the Audi stuff but it's a bit dull to drive - A4 Avant with the 200ish bhp turbo petrol is a similar category but you could look at an older S4 for a properly rapid estate.

Merc have a couple of possibles - again not as good to drive but still well made and nippy - the C350 (petrol) is very rapid and the C320CDI is the diesel alternative.

Not a lot else out there in the small estate/pokeyish engine department. There's the RS4 and C63 estate but both are bonkers money to buy and run.
