Wonder how much it'll cost. The Lupo GTI was £12k+, had 125bhp and reached 60 in 8.3secs. This car could be as quick, if not quicker but still, at least according to VW, not be worthy of the GTI moniker. Also, remember that Adidas Golf GTI special edition they had in Germany? Something 'funky' like that would be pretty cool on a city car like this.
Excellent. But as so many on here have said 'This!' perhaps that's what they should have named it.
'What car do you drive?'
'This!'

Hmm 3 cylinders, petrol and a turbo...
Modern spitual successor to the Daihatsu Charad GTti?
Either way, we need more nippy, light, fun and funky little cars, so I'm in!
Unfortunately, I don't think that will be the case.Modern spitual successor to the Daihatsu Charad GTti?

It would need more like 150hp and a decent torque curve to be any good, given that it will almost certainly weigh over 1000kg.
Remember that a phase 1 RenaultSport Clio 172 weighed 1050kg.
I wish Toyota/Daihatsu would sell something decent over here (in Japan they got the Boon x4 - like a UK Sirion, 4wd, 936cc turbo).
I am all for someone coming out with a decent, lightweight, fun and potent supermini!
It seems to me that the days of fun, light and communicative superminis is gone, the likes of the Honda CRX, Pug 205 GTI, Daihatsu Charade GTti, Renault Clio Williams are gone.
Comfort and safety are (rightly so, in the grand scheme of things) taking away the driving experience for enthusiasts. Too much sound deadening, bushing and damping, crash protection etc etc are bloating the cars and nullifying what used to be heard/felt through the seat and pedals and steering wheel.
I vividly remember my first drive of each of the hot superminis/hatches I listed above and can re-tell the stories and my experience easily, because each of them was exciting - it was an experience.
It is these experiences I have discussed with other owners of these cars, who can all share and tell thier stories with equal enthusiasm.
My prediction is that this VW up will be as dull to drive as the rest of the current crop of small "hot" cars. That is to say it will be a dull, damp squib.
In 20 years, I doubt anyone will be talking about the first time they got to drive a VW Up with any genuine enthusiasm and fondness.

Why is the Twingo publicised so much? Yaris 1.8 SR 133bhp N/A 980kg, factory lowered and stiffened suspension, 17" alloys, and all different bumpers/exhaust to the other models. Released around a year before the first Twingo... Also, the Twingo's interior was hidious.
The 1.3 SR weighed 1050kg and the 1.8 weight 1095kg unladen. I had both and the 1.8 was st around corners, just mega understeer. They should've just given us the 1.5 turbo engine that Japan got. MintyChris said:

Will be interesting to see how it is priced against the new Suzuki Swift Sport. The suzuki has 134 bhp, 6 gears (maunal) and weighs around 1050kg.
True, but the Suzuki is in another class, it's a massive car in comparisonI like this. Allways fancied a lupo gti.

This is what so many young people are looking for. Toyota/Peugeot/Citroen missed a trick by not producing a hot Aygo/C1/107!
I reckon they are, massively.I've found 107s a hoot to drive, 100+ horsepower and stiffer springs and wider tyres and it would be awesome!
I've recently driven a turbo 107 with just over 100bhp, and a fireblade powered 180bhp C1. both great fun, and very different at the same time.

The Up GT deserves to succeed. I doubt VW will manage to keep the price below £13k though (the black and white models are £12k+ I think). It needs moel specific ARBs and suspension if it's going to feel like a GT. I wonder if the variant will be translated to vRS or Cupra models for the other two of the triplets? It would make development costs a bit more managable.
However, the Lupo GTI had aluminium bonnet, doors and front wings, unique shell and drivetrain (it wasn't the same as the 6N2 Polo GTI). Cool factor rating 10/10.

The Dub looks pretty good too - if it does something like the Lupo GTi did, VW should sell stacks of them.
The problem with the Lupo GTI was that it was too expensive for what it was, many prospective purchasers went for a MINI Cooper instead (my wife included). As a result, VW sold less than 1000 GTIs in the UK if my memory serves me correctly. However, the Lupo GTI had aluminium bonnet, doors and front wings, unique shell and drivetrain (it wasn't the same as the 6N2 Polo GTI). Specifications of Up GT have just leaked. Quite an interesting car... http://www.autoforum.cz/predstaveni/volkswagen-up-...
