Thank you very much but it's actually a facelift model. It also has Irmscher front bumper/splitter, skirts and grille and a set of Azev 'A' 17" rims with the same offset as Lotus Carlton wheels.

And in all fairness, the bootspace champion of the world accolade actually goes to the Carlton it replaced but it's not far off the mark.

Ah yes, of course the interior gives it away - facelift indeed.... cracking mota !

Difficult to know what to replace it with. Any sensibly priced suggestions?
A common question on the omega forum, supply's of late low miles examples are drying up.
Contenders;
Vxr8 for the sport drivers. Or any Holden.(not enough toys, no through space to the boot)
Vw Phaeton for the comfort minded. (No estate version, still to depreciate enough, steep running costs)
Audi a6 (as above)

Er... That's it....? Nothing has the toy level of the Elites for a car of this age for the money, the size and trough space of the saloon boot, the load capacity of the Estate, or the level of depreciation required to make it cheap enough in the first place as a used car. The mv6 is very capable for a car this size.
Throw in deals on trade club for certain parts, a self diagnostic engine management system giving v engine trouble code without the need for a code reader, and easy LPG conversion with a technically very useful owners forum for problems, and I'll defy anyone to find a rear wheel drive 200plus bhp performance motor for less money, including running costs.

In fact I ask you pistonheads, given the above, what is there to replace the omega for similar money??? Budget alone discounts the German Marques. Although respect for their rear wheel drive ethos.... I suppose. biggrin

I've had that very quandary hence the reason I now run two cars. A Nissan 300ZX TT for sh!ts and giggles and a LWB 3.5 V6 Pajero for the more utilitarian requirements.

I think the only trick Vx missed with the Omega B was a production 4x4! Now THAT would've been amazing!

I will shortly be disposing of my Facelift Elite 3.0 , mainly due to some rust bubbles on one of the rear arches.

I've pretty much decided that an S Type Jag V8 or V8-R is going to be the weapon of choice. Same or better level of toys, reasonable size boot and I *think* they still have the old OBD-II socket so my code reader will work.

There is an excellent Jag forum for issues and help.

Yes the S-Type is ugly but as a waft mobile at a good price with all the toys its perfect to replace the Omega IMHO.

I have to say they appeal to me.

V70's do not tow anywhere near as well as a good Omega.

I went from an Omega 2.5 to a V70 T5 which turned out to be to soft at the rear and not very good brakes, so I sold the V70 went back to an Omega V6 3.0 with self leveling rear, fantastic tow car.
The V70 was a bit of a let down for towing.
Legacy estate are supposed to be good tow cars. Can tow up to two tons apparently

My first company car.... a 1997 2.5 V6 CDX in Dark Green with velour interior.

I loved it though the fuel bills would have been frightening if I wasn't fully expensed - I seem to remember an average of about 13mpg
Also had both the exhaust manifolds go, the cambelt was an expensive job and a number of the pixels on the screen had packed up, but I'd have another.

Back in 2000 when I got her, an Omega barrelling along the outside lane at >1 lepton used to make others get out of the way sharpish.... an illusion made even more real at night when my boss (who used to sit in the back with the front passenger seat folded forward to make a table) had his laptop running!!

Sold her to a garage in Bristol in the end.... R139 MWP where are you now?

I've just bought one of these. Took it on a test drive on Monday, picking it up on Thursday.

Perfect car for around here (Isle of Man) - fuel consumption doesn't matter, and great at overtaking.

Good grief! I can guarantee if my car got written off I wouldn't be able to find anything like that on sale for weeks.
Helluva lot of car for the cash

Had one of these as my first car when I was 18.

Sadly only the 2.0 litre model, but I learned the joy's of rear wheel drive and have gravitated towards it ever since.

They also handle incredibly well for a bog standard, mid-sized family saloon.

I bought one of these here in States just last year. It's a 2001 Cadillac Catera 3.0 V6. The Cateras were built on the same Russelsheim production line as their Opel/Vauxhall Omega brethren. It had 116,000 miles when I bought it last summer and I'm up to 123,000 now. I love the Bose stereo in this car. Bargain barge, indeed!

I see this thread has been revived! I had forgot about it.

Since we're all here, I post some update photos.

Not wanting to be mistaken for a stereotypical Cadillac driving pensioner, I decided to order some bits from Blighty and create the world's only US-spec Vauxhall Omega! Now all I need is a rear bumper cover so I can fit the matching rear UK plate I have (along with the Tennessee plate to keep it legal, of course!).

A shame the car failed in the USA... but it really was too small and underpowered to be considered a true Cadillac.
