2000-2002 polo gti, any good?

Gearbox is made of chocolate and they have issues with the pedal box. So get both checked before you part with the cash.
Other than that, great little car. I loved mine (see profile). Not hugely fast but nippy enough and well built/equipped.
Can't really remember much about fuel/tax/insurance etc.

I owned one from July 2006 to April 2010. Bought at 29k and sold at 68k, gearbox went at 58k and cost me £900 for reconditioned box and fitting - I did expect this along the line. Little niggly thing went wrong with mine, I went through two Xenon bulbs and the leaking rear washer pipe shorted the boot fuse so had to get that replaced. Sounds bad but other than that I loved it. Noticably better built than any other supermini, looks fantastic too. I had the rare leather interior which didn't really support you at all but looked great. Although the dash isn't the most ergonomic it has aged well and has the nice blue dials. Great standard spec even now. I ran mine on Super Unleaded and got around 34 MPG average, managed a record of 47 MPG once?! It's not the fastest car (8.3 to 60) but the engine sounds great and handling is pretty good as standard, even better with coilovers. Steering isn't perfect but you do get some feedback, something totally lacking from all non GTI Polos I've driven. Just check the service history, take it out for a run, if you can hear faint "whirling" or metallic grinding noises you will know the gearbox is on it's way out! Still miss mine!
I'd certainly see if you could fine one that already has it as a safeguard. Most boxes are reconditioned with stronger bearings. Not sure how true this is but the original gearbox design is based on a much older Polo and wasn't designed for the output of the GTI, hence the bearings wear. There is no set time for them to go, some people have had theirs go at 16k, some owners have done 100k+ on the original box
Great car to drive, very much the go-kart on a decent A road. I've kept up with much more powerful cars on them. On a run could be very buzzy.
We went through 3 gearboxes before we called time, and the ABS pump failed.
We liked that car a lot, as it was good fun. But I can't recommend one to anyone.

Just the one? Knew these were quite rare but someone must have an opinion. What's the tax/insurance like? It ok ok fuel?
Until mid last year I had one and enjoyed it a lotDay I bought it picture
Day I sold it Picture
Had a succession of Polos - MKII Polo Coupe S, folowed by MKIV 1.4 and then the MKV GTi
Pedal box recall sticker will be under the boot carpet and marked in the service book if it's been done
Gearbox wise I sold mine with a fairly high mileage and still (as far as I am aware) on the original gear box but the new owner has since told me it's whining so I'll give him a had to swap the box out once he's got a replacement
MPG was better than my 1.4 but varied a lot according to use avg 35mpg best of 39 and worst of 29 - it was less economical on M-Ways as it's short geared and a bit frantic for that type of journey.
Revy little engine and liked to be up in the revs too
They have a fair bit of wind/tyre noise at speed
Black isn't the best colour for me - so I keep buying black cars
Must flog the winter wheels too....... Cos I've still got them in the garage
