A lot of bullst on this thread, as with every BMW thread.

"it's too heavy" - The M5 has NEVER been a lightweight car. It's comparable to it's rivals.

"it looks too much like a regular 5 series" - Thats the whole point!

"it's ugly" - just like most people said the E60 was ugly now most people like it.

BMW do make some ugly cars, the 5 series GT and the new 1 series are hideous and the new 3 isn't exactly a thing of beauty. But the F10 is a very nicely proportioned car and toned down compared to the rest of the range. I'm certain that in future years we will all look back on the F10 with the same fondness we currently have for the E39.

People may moan that it's turbo powered but sadly high MPG and low CO2 are what sell cars even at this price bracket and turbos are the easiest way to achieve this. I'm sure they could get the same figures from a N/A engine but it would add more the the cost of the car and everyone would bh and moan about that instead.

The only critisisms I have are the lack of a manual gearbox and the shutline between the bumper and the bonnet, very cheap looking. Otherwise i'd be suprised if, in time, the F10 M5 doesn't turn out to be the best drivers car in it's class and the fastest around a track.

WRT noise you can't have your apples, oranges and pears all at once, not in a car with this much refinement and insulation.
No one ever complained about too much serenity when passing 150MPH and still being able to hold a conversation.

It sounds better than 99% of cars out there, and if it sounded like a silly F458 it would be ridiculous and sent packing. The engine noise is enhanced in the best way without drilling your ear drums out like those silly Fiats that everyone assumes is a great noise.
i'm not the only one who doesn't like the noise the 458 makes!!!!!! give me a proper V8 bellow or a screaming V10 or V12 any day biggrin

now, i'm prepared to be stoned to death hehe

It will be better than the E60 for sure, and I don't rule out it being an E39 successor for road & track.

No stoning from here, the F458 and it's predecessor have the most annoying sounding exhausts ever that blare out "I have ARRIVED in my big RED Ferrari".The f355 sounds like a musical instrument, what went wrong?

Clever how the CSL managed the best noise ever but it's still sane at low speeds...

I'd prefer the additional serenity of some subdued, distant howl to any notion of an i-Thetan's compressed noise file.

One can debate until the stars fall o'er the 'correct' repertoire of a Funf ito its performo-comfort 'envelope' by referencing prior incarnations and what one feels it should be/do, etc.

However, this is no mere air to water, 911 purist landmark moment; this is the day the cybermen brainwashed crazy Hans who, bemused by sheer speed and a beautiful cabin, amazing poise and a general sense of indomitable passage, forgot his immortal soul and Satan replaced control with a legion of evil synthesised wizards.

Would it pass Reynold-Crompton's 'Enzo test?' No, no and thrice, no.

F10 B5, if an F10 ye must.

i'm not sure whether i'd rather sound-system audio, or no noise at all, like the panemera turbo, for instance.

as lovely as it is, that engine makes the dullest engine noise ever. at least the M5 sounds great from the outside (making tunnel runs still very interesting biggrin )

he also likes the M5 though. he says it does everything very, very well and said it feels like it's 1600kgs not 1900 or whatever it is; and that, at heart, it's still a proper lunatics car.
Nah bro- check your reading comprehension... in the comparison XFR takes on the M5 from May 2009....sutty wrote...

"Five-star road test verdicts are pretty rare in this business, but the XFR deserves one more than just about any car we can think of right now. It is a quite extraordinary machine, and what defines it most obviously is its vast, almost never-ending range of attributes. On one hand it plays the role of refined mile-eater at least as well as any so-called luxury car, and on the other it has sufficient raw dynamic ability to drop a BMW M5 in a heartbeat. It is also extremely well made, very well equipped, entirely comfortable for four people and their luggage and several thousand pounds cheaper than its nearest rivals, none of which are as fast in the real world. Jaguar has produced a true world-beater. As a sign of things to come, it shines as brightly as any Jaguar we’ve ever driven, and there have been some pretty good ones over the years."

May be wrong but wasn't the old M5 quicker, being 5 years the younger too?

Arguably the xfr is against the current M5 due to the ages. I reckon the f10 will spank the E60 dynamically. Watch early 1.24s or possibly high 1.23 top gear, if it's dry.

If BMW had made a 6.0 V12 M7 back in the late 90's this would have been it, but back then such a huge expensive powerful BMW M car made no sense.

I know it's a sign of the times yadda yadda, but it's so uncreative to just keep sticking more power into the cars as they bulk out.

The last four M cars are now all turbo charged, and all are heavier than any other car in their range.

I'm looking forward more to their eco car thingy.

Personally I do prefer to read what a jurno actually thinks, rather than what they need to say to keep the advertising department happy.

So I fully support Dan (&PH) for being honest in offering us his FIRST impressions.

I recently swapped a Cerbera for a S-Tyre R, I could have got an M3/5, an A4/5/6 or even another A8 but with W12.

But as Dan said the M5 does not do it for me either and very few BMW's ever have.
(8 series being the exception!)
Mercedes also leave me rather cold overall.
The Audi's also seem either rather bland or too - how can I put it "flash".

So for me the Jaguar "package" was the answer and I love it.

Undoubtedly the M5 (and the others) is/are a great car, so can't we just accept it won't suite everybody?

I thought we all agreed that ultimate "Ring Time" was not the be-all and end-all.

With the second bit he'll be meaning they're the heaviest in their respective series.

I wasn't sure since as far as I'm aware, they always have been? Possible exceptional of the original M3, possibly as it used a 4 potbot a 6 pot the 325i had.

People would moan of the current m3 had 2 cylinders less than the top of the range non M though, I reckon.

Users are beginning to read the script on the wall and see these cars and the "industry" for much of what they are; thats progress. j
