RE: PH Blog: M5 talks dirty
Discussion
Being technically impressive doesn't mean it's actually awe inspiring and something to get under your skin.
There is the spirit and the technical ability. Perhaps BMW have just gone chasing the technical ability over the spirit with this one? The last M5 was possibly more in the spirit camp?
In any case, all these cars do leave me wondering what the point is. You'd need huge and empty roads to really enjoy them, and even 200bhp/tonne these days is plenty to get you in trouble within a few moments if you want, either for speed limits, traction issues or corners
Why BMW can't just buck the trend. Make a 5.0 turbo with 500bhp as a rapid express by all means, but why not make one with an NA 6 pot and about 350bhp, and then spend the £25,000 left on carbon everywhere, and make it super light/agile and a driving tool beyond autobahn express?!
Ignore how many they would actually sell, just do it because they can, and show that their best drivers cars don't have to be the most expensive or fastest on paper!

Unless things have changed the main reason the M5 doesn't compare to any AMG Merc is that the one is a manual and the other is for old men / city dwellers.
Manual? It seems things have changed, only the Yanks got proper manuals and they are supposed to be the ones who can't drive.
In that case I'm with Dan - another fast, dull, auto so yes just like an AMG.

Dan - So you don't like it and it makes you feel cold. Well boo hoo for you. Learn something from the new PH staff member (the one who did the McLaren F1 article) and write something interesting for us to read.
So you don't like someone else's opinion.Boo hoo.
What a boring world you live in, where all you want to hear & read are people who agree with everything you say and think.

He's got a point about the article though. In summaryBoo hoo.

Qualifications, I've driven lots of powerful mercs.
Experience of this car, one week on varied roads.
Conclusion, not sure I'm that impressed.
If the blogs were regular like the long term updates in the back of evo, fine but this is aimless and boring. A week in the company of the most widely anticipated car in years and - he's not sure.
Room for manoeuvre there then, like the CSL, once his brethren decide it's actually a car one has to 'master'. Yawn.
Not sure about the costs of these things.
It always used to be super car performance at not stupid pricing.
In recent years 'M' and AMG have both been driving prices higher and higher, aided by PCP and leases.
You know have to seriously want the extra performance cause you are sure paying through the nose for it.

I think the problem here is that it's the first m car that has been built with greenish credentials and there's always going to be compramises. I don't think BMW would have chosen this route for the M5 given the choice. As for the styling and long term opinion of this M5 im sure it will become an all time great as i remember the e60 getting a wave of hate when first lauched and now everyone is misty eyed over it :-)

Was this not the usual reaction with each new generation?I hope Dan isn't a paid member of staff, that article could have been written by somebody who had never been in the car, it was entirely content free except for his own personal and rather neutral perspective. Boring and irrelevant, give me an M5 for a week and I would deliver a hell of a lot more than that!
Not too sure what "trying too hard" and "comfortable in its own skin" really means, when we're talking about inanimate objects of metal, plastic, glass, rubber etc.
As for myself, I tend to look at it in terms of numbers sold. Of course a very expensive car will sell less than a cheap car, but that said, it seems like the m5 (and the amg) are selling well enough in their sectors, so they're not bad cars, otherwise the market would reject them and that'd be the end of them.
I havent owned either, have been passengers in both, and frankly, they strike me as overpriced, heavy cars, with a lot of power.
I like my cars light (eg impreza's / evo's, and I own a 22b myself), so neither of the cars really appeal to me.
As far as luxury goes, I had a lexus LS, and thats a car which will get its doors well and truly blown off by either of the cars discussed, and you know what? I couldnt care less. I'd have the much less powerful lexus any day of the week before these.

Initial musings on handing the car over - fear not, you're going to be seeing and reading a lot more about this very car on PH in the not too distant. The blogs are a personal view too, a more informal way for us to share thoughts and ramblings rather than a definitive verdict.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
