It doesn't photograph well. Get one in the right colour and in the flesh it can look very imposing.

I don't think there's a better car for driving 4 adults a long way.

Personally, I'd go for a RR Phantom. smile

Or even an S-class, to be honest.

Not that I've been in a Panamera, to be fair. Or a Phantom come to that. frown

Don't really see the point in making a track animal out of it. I do have a love for the Panamera though i think they are great cars. I like the fact that they are sort of awkward and ugly, i don't know there is just something i really like about them. I find they look much better in the flesh.

It's a tough life on PH I know, but we have travelled to Geneva as a team in a Phantom and to Frankfurt in a Panamera 4s. The Porsche was more comfortable for fast driving and offered a lovely environment to passengers (we all swapped from driver to passenger throughout).

The Phantom was a memorable journey for all the reasons you would expect, but we agreed that the Panamera delivered four of us to Frankfurt fresher and more relaxed than any airline. It's an impressive mile muncher....handles well too.

But would it have delivered you fresher than the Phantom? If so, that's a fairly impressive achievement.

To be honest a 2CV would deliver me fresher than an airline - I hate flying, even first class.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say (badly). For me it was the better mile muncher, lacks the occasion of the RR but was more effective for the job (IMO).

Interesting, what did the Porsche do better?

ETA: Anyway, I can't imagine this one is really aimed at that. smile

I fail to understand why this or any Panamera is compared to an M5 or a CLS for that matter. Porsche by their own admission stated that the car was designed to compete against the S-Class & 7 Series. So, I'd presume it's overall size & chassis lenght is in keeping with the real big boys, if so I know which one I'd take out of those three (as he dreams on smile ). Of course by default it can be compared to 5 & CLS I reckon, simply because Porsche don't have a smaller saloon available. It's just, a bloody pity Porsche couldn't have used their imagination and not grafted a 911 nose on the front.

Now, back to the classifieds! frown

Simple stuff like providing a more comfortable rear seat (honestly) and as it felt more planted at (ahem) European speeds it was more focussed for the driver. We had a laugh in the Rolls, enjoyed every mile in fact, but as a ground missile that seats four in comfort, and for when you just want to settle in and get to your destination, I would take the Porsche.

Obviously the Porsche would be better to drive. I'm just surprised it was better to passenger in too. Makes the RR look a bit daft.

Very wide....Too wide to be usable every day in the UK imho. Be good if Porsche made a smaller 3 series version of the panamera though.

No doubt they have considered it or if they haven't VW will do it for them. The only downside would be pricing as I can't see it being 3 Series money (that's what Audi is there for), and in fairness to BMW I can't see it being a whole lot better either, unless....... wink

It's a big old brute of a thing, but I like them a lot in the flesh for some reason.

And fair play to Porsche. About 20 years ago, supercars were pulling just over 1 lateral G in the turns, now a 2 tonne luxo barge like this is seemingly pulling over 1.2 lateral G...! eeek

Sure but the wonder in the 3 series class (for me) though, isn't that the 3 series is a great car (and it is really good) but how all its competitors are so consistently awful and/or Fwd....

I see quite a lot of them around here, and they look even worse in the metal to me. Pictures hide quite how big the things are.

Mind you if I needed a big four-seater, it'd probably still be top of my list.

Damn you Garlick, answering opinions with facts !
Not being lucky enough to take regular drives across the continent in these sort of cars, I'll bow down to your superior wisdom.
Also, as many of us keep saying it's an ugly car I have to add that this matter is very subjective, and model specific.
get it in the right colour, with the right wheels on it, and they can look epic!
Get it wrong however, and you'll look like a knob.

Neither the C-class nor the IS is awful or FWD.

Maybe not if you're 60 and don't enjoy driving much. I wouldn't classify either as a great drive though. Effectively the 3 series has no competition.

I don't see what age has got to do with it and all the reviews I've read comparing the current C-class to the current 3-series have said they are very close in the chassis department. I've not driven the current C-class but I certainly wasn't particularly impressed by the E90s that I've driven.
