Dear BMW.

Why oh why oh why oh why won't you offer 4WD MODELS FOR THE UK MARKET, dammit !!!

It has been years. Audi gets everything in this market in the UK. They are a choice of one.

Get your act together. Pull your finger out. It is'nt good enough.

THIS. I much prefer BMWs to Audis, but trying to get one up the hill I used to live on when it'd been snowing - or even in heavy rain - was pretty hairy. A 4 wheel drive BMW saloon would be pretty much my ideal car, especially with that sort of power/economy balance going on.
I don't get it.

4wd adds weight, more drive train losses so you upset the balance and reduce MPG.

If you want a car to work in the snow put winter tyres on?

Yes can you just delete any reference to M diesels - the shameful MX6d can't count.

yes

mate has a B7 RS4 avant, says it's the worst car he's ever driven in the snow.

Impressive technology, yes. Soul-less, probably. And garnished with a hint of arrogance that suggests we're not worthy of getting what other countries will be offered.

And you have got a serious chip on you're shoulder , we are not getting it because of re engineering costs

yeah exactly. people think 4wd is the be all and end all, when 2wd with winter tyres is usually enough in the UK.

plus....we've not had 1 day of snow in the last, what, 11 months or so? not here at least

No chip at all, its my opinion. Love the tech, having had a fettled 535D Touring, there was little to touch it. Its great stuff, but its too impressive and too close to the flagship M5. And you're not telling me the M5 is cheap to engineer in RHD....

Shame they aren't bringing the 550d here, even if it was M5 money they'd sell a quite a few as posh company cars because of the low(ish) CO2.

Well, where i live 4WD is bloody useful. Admittedly, I live in a properly rural area but the lanes around here are knee deep in mud and crap and clay dumped from farm machinery etc etc.

Driving into fields with the dogs, towing a trailer with stuff for the horses, pulling a trailer with an old car on the back, you name it. FWD just ain't good enough. And people like me are not unusual. Quattro versions of Audi A4's and A6 are all over the place around here together with the usual SUV's and a sprinkling of Subaru's. BMW are not taking part.

People like you are quite unusual, in the grand scheme of things - I doubt they make up more than 1% of the driving population. Admittedly that's still a significant market, but it's still a fairly small one.

I'm sure BMW have put a fair amount of thought into whether it's commercially viable to convert the 4WD saloons to RHD, so presumably it's not.
