RE: PH Blog: meeting the XJ220
Discussion
Love the XJ220 and though a few years back it was looking a little dated I'm starting to think it's really starting to age well.
Friend of mine in Dubai showed me a photo of a XJ220 abandoned in the complex car park. Owner left the country never to return and it was stood for 2 or more years outside left to gather dust and sand.
Would be in my fantasy garage, painted orange, right after I'd bought a red F40 but before the white 959 Speedster.

Get yourself to the NEC in November for MPH live / classic car show and you can usually buy a ride in one, on public roads. You are picked up and dropped off from the exhibition halls (quite literally) returning a few quid ligther. The money is all for charity and the drivers all volunteers (do not even claim expenses), from "The Sporting Bears".
Saw this there last year. It's more than a few quid lighter for the xj though. More than I could justify even if it was for charity and in one of my childhood hero cars.KP said:

They certainly have! That BMW Nazca thing looks mental!Still lust after that Jag though!
When I was a kid , 7 or 8, there used to be 3 of these in the local Jaguar grange. There was a navy blue one, a green one and a silver one. I went a bit later when only the silver one remained unsold to have a look at it with my mum, and it was amazing. I wasn't allowed to touch it as the dealer said it had just been cleaned, though that didn't stop him from using the rear wing as a desk for his clipboard. What is more it cost £108,000 which I think is a bargain considering how much they are going up in value. This is my favourite childhood supercar and one day I might have one, I hope.
Sigh. Metro engine bks again.
The engine had nothing to do with the 6R4. The technical lead on the 220 project went into this in some detail elsewhere, which frankly I can't be bothered to re-read, but from memory it was derived from a group C race engine TWR were using at the time.
It was a commercial failure because deposits were taken before the arse fell out of the square mile. Cue dozens of chinless toffs heading to court to get theirs back, using the convenient v6/v12 story as grounds.

Exactly the point I was making - Those Metro V6/4wd nay-sayers talk out of their behinds (IMHO) The engine had nothing to do with the 6R4. Good to see Andy Wallace still thrashing XJ220s. I think it was him driving this one at GFOS in 1994
Back in the days when it was "the right crowd and no crowding..."
Of course, it didn't end well for Andy that day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsq7VLlT-Qk
Shame I'd run out of film by then!

There's an interesting (read nerdy) website that details the existance of all known XJ200s - http://www.xj220data.com/cars/results/?&page=1
On a side note I work in the building next to the test track and that XJ220S sounded amazing when it went past. Flames on the overrun too which looked impressive. Every time it came past the whole office stopped what it was doing to watch it!!
