Love the XJ220, perhaps even more so due to the criticism it gets.
Stunning looking things and would still destroy most things from a standing start, especially the S model.
I think that's a good point. The more snobbery levelled at it, the more mythical it somehow becomes. I think it's absolutely amazing.. and who cares if it was never the car that was promised. It still did 220MPH (more than most supercars today) and it still looks fabulous.. nothing more needs to be said IMHO. Stunning looking things and would still destroy most things from a standing start, especially the S model.
They delivered a car with a proper race bred and created engine, with more power, better fuel economy, less weight and better weight distribution. Ditching the 4wd also likely improved curb weight, balance and driver involvement.
So logically, why would you criticize for making a car better and faster?

One of these sat in Grange Motors in Brentwood, Essex, for quite a few years, looking very sad. Re the brand new one for sale. I've read somewhere that the V6 engine 'suffers' if not run occasionaly. I believe the valve springs 'settle'. Anyone concur ?
Anyone buying it would be insane to run it, and if they did they'd have to be a certifiable moron to not have a full works rebuild somewhere in the Midlands. slashley said:
Sorry doods but the yellow looks horrible and the black around the lights looks rubbish.
(Groan...) Always one... "rear lights are rubbish"FFS Wouldn't want one then?
I think the yellow makes the car.
Hey, all you Metro / Yellow / Rear light 'nobs..... Let's see you do a better job,eh?

personally, that looks fantastic in yellow, and even the 500+bhp in something that weighs the same as a capri !!!! good to hear it can manage a days hard play without missing a beat too... might raise the flag and be proud until the kebab shop complains to the council

Great if you are buying though. F1 and F40 prices are through the roof. 220 a relative bargain.
Nail on head. Can't figure out why the 220 remains the poor relation.Don & Justin are 2 of the nicest blokes around; known them both for over 10 years and was lucky enough to witness Justin's skill for myself up close and personal from the passenger seat the day the 220 van got its first MOT. In the wet on the A50. I believe they have a V12 XJ220 in build currently
Being rather keen on Jaguars, I felt for the car when its marketing, cost and changes to original specification hit home, good concept, production led changes, recession led to demand collapse etc etc.
Unsold stock depreciated the value of delivered cars, also people walked away from their orders and lost their deposits, V12 engine hid by emission problems as well? at the time.
Glad to see its status is now rising, but it is a very big car and wide so general driving appears unrealistic.
Pride of place in my den is a very large Maisto model of the brg production car with the V6 engine.

The 220 is a great car & is, in my humble opinion, a greatly under-appreciated supercar.
Many many years ago i was lucky enough to blag a ride in the original V12 engined monster - what a beast & a truly great pity that the car didnt end up with the V12 sitting in the back.
Also drove a standard production car on many occasions & i loved it. A big car, but a quick car which turned heads simply because not many people knew what it was at the time.

The V 12 version is not road legal so must have been on display somewhere

Get yourself to the NEC in November for MPH live / classic car show and you can usually buy a ride in one, on public roads. You are picked up and dropped off from the exhibition halls (quite literally) returning a few quid ligther. The money is all for charity and the drivers all volunteers (do not even claim expenses), from "The Sporting Bears".
Dream Rides for charity £100-00 for a ride in the 220 great funI've just been laughing/gawping at the massive aerial which is erected on the shot of the silver XJ220 lapping Gaydon. How could anyone manufacture/design team in their right mind attach such a hideous fixture to such a jaw-dropping flank?
I remember being taken to see the car by my Dad as Jaguar were running an XJ220 roadshow, whereby a 220 visited everyone of it's dealerships to drum up business, promote the car and also presumably to find new, younger owners, as most of their existing ones were dying of old age in 1992 with only the XJ40 and XJS to choose from!
I remember being mesmerised by the sheer presence of the car, but hating the interior, which compared to Ferrari's and Lambos of the time, seemed very cheap, basic and unexciting.
I'd love to drive one. I remember Clarkson driving one on TG yonks ago and everytime he gave it the beans in second, the Alpine head unit flew out!

Anybody remember this 220 related story? (pasted below) Check the value Quentin (I'll put my name too, or make guest appearance for the most tenuously car-related item possible) expertly put on 220s! I don't think it was even that long ago. Surely you've never been able to buy them for less than £100k? The auction example must have been a pup?
BUILDERS FIND HIDDEN £450,000 SUPERCAR
By Richard Smith
A JAGUAR supercar, costing £450,000 new, hits the road for the first time after being found bricked up in a secret room at a failed carpet firm.
The 218mph XJ220, once the world's fastest production car, is taken away on a transporter to be sold for creditors. Company bosses bought the Jaguar as an investment before the market in exotic cars crashed.
Builders sent in by the liquidators removed a brick wall surrounding a staircase and discovered the hidden treasure at Marlborough Carpets in Cardiff.
The Jag had just 11 miles on the clock and had spent seven years in the hideaway. The XJ220 had a limited production run of 350 but only about 280 cars left the factory after the 1992 launch.
Daily Mirror motoring correspondent Quentin Willson said: "You would now be doing well to get £110,000 to £120,000 on a very good day. One sold recently in Geneva for £85,000 and that was in tip-top condition."

There's an interesting (read nerdy) website that details the existance of all known XJ200s - http://www.xj220data.com/cars/results/?&page=1
Actually that is interesting because I've found the car my friend showed me of the abandoned XJ220. http://www.xj220data.com/cars/detail/?car=SAJJEAEX...

I love it too and never really understood the criticism. Jag originally touted a V12 4wd model. But that was big, heavy, drank like an alcoholic fish and had an engine from a saloon car.
Again, this is an interesting statement as it has only driven 9 miles!cc8s said:

Not really.V12 has 12 cylinders and is long and heavy. A V6 only has six, so is half as long and likely near half the weight. You don't need to drive it to work this out.
This applies to the 4wd system, which would require a centre diff, extra front diff, front prop, front driveshafts and so on. All adding weight over a RWD setup.
In terms of the V12's performance, well the engine proposed was the same engine Jaguar had been racing and also found a home in the XJR15. A wonderful engine (I know as I simply loved my 5.3 V12 XJ-S ) but even in GT racing it was known for it's huge thirst and it was never the most powerful engine available. The XJR15 for example only managed around 450hp from 6.0 litres which is 100hp down on the 3.5 V6 twin turbo.
