Also, I've never known another car which can sit on the drive back home cooling off, at midnight, with a bright red glowing turbo assembly showing through the transparent engine cover ! Wish I'd taken a photo of that.

It only took 18 months from the end of Group B before the Group A cars started beating the previous best Group B stage times (Tour de Corse 1988). Most of those Group A cars didn't even manage 300bhp at that time.
Some of the early Group A cars very quickly had nearer 380-400bhp, despite the rules stating a maximum of 300bhp. It wasn't properly governed until the early 90's, around the time of the Toyota turbo scandal (1995?). The book 'Rally Cars' by Reinhard Klein gives some good info.

Cracking video review by the way PH, enjoyed it!

This video and text journalism mix is a great idea and the quality of Chris Harris is great. The evo stuff has been good in the past, but this seems even better. Knowledgable, enthusiastic... How long before he ends up with a tv show? Well done PH and Chris Harris!

Cue all these people on the messageboards for $insertTVchannel "Who is he why is he on my TV go away he can't even powerslide"

Plus he'd be exposing himself to a lot of non-petrolheads and... well even us lot are a pretty contentious bunch of people who've sometimes taken enough offense at a video to have it expunged from the human consciousness... imagine the riots on the streets if that McGTR episode had been shown on TV!

Indeed, there was some funny business going on in rallying at the time. There was some suggestion that the FIA was aware that cars were running well above their quoted 300bhp (reports of Lancia Delta Integrales and Escort Cosworths doing nearly 400bhp were common). But once again, it was Toyota who looked suspicious at times. Now the Celica GT4 ST205's complex butterfly clip turbo cheat was very clever, but in the previous generation of Celica they had been accused of using rocket fuel! To be fair, that Celica really was shifting when the allegation was made.

What a brilliant video. The RS200 is my all time favourite and has been since I was 10 years old. Funnily enough, that was when it released. I experienced a passenger ride in one, round Knockhill with Jimmy McRae driving, when I was 11 years old. It was by far the quickest thing I've been in, and even now I remember it clearly.
The Audi, well, nah, not really my cup of tea, but Steve Perez's restored rally version, that really is the business!!

It'd be the RS200 every time for me.

I just love the thing.

Used to watch one at Croft doing the Rallycross a few years ago. No idea if it was real or a kit car.
