Who is this bloke?

Clearly not a motoring journo, can't do a three point turn (turning the wheel while stationary- PLEASE!), can't drift despite trying several times (even in a RS200 on a private road) and the Quattro is "in his top 10" yet he wrote less than 2 sentances about what its like to drive....

Brilliant cars and a pleasure to see them but what was the report and video all about? Was like Top Gear from the 80's with Quinten Wilson doing the review.

A take it he's the same showoff who rode in the F1 without a seatbelt and nearly p*ssed himself?

Hopefully PH let him review a door knob next week.

Hi Chris,

You want to try a wide selection of Group B cars? Give Juha a shout!

http://www.insideline.com/features/collection-of-a...

His are not the road spec 'to homologate' cars, but full Group B rally spec, with number plates.

Nice 288 and F40 also smile

Alex

Great video smile Would very much like to see more road tests of cars that were "great in their day" and see how they hold up today... smile

After they were banned from Rallying I remember seeing RS200 and 6R4s advertised in the classifieds at the back of Motoring News (was that its name ? It was a weekly Motorsport paper) from £5k.

I nearly bought one but I was a student and couldn't justify / afford to run one as a road car.

Oh how I kicked myself when Rallycross started and the prices lept skywards.
I cant imagine RS200s have ever been close to 5k, surely? Even in the late 80s that would seem a bit unlikely.
Don't think so. IIRC the Clubman 6R4s were the cheapest of the 4WD cars and dropped from 40k to 12k. The BX4TC was 21k. RS200s were pitched at 50k, but went for a lot less. I don't think Sport quattros were discounted.
The 6R4's were off loaded at £16k a piece in kit form.

The RS200's as you say were off loaded at around £50k

Sport Quattro's certainly weren't discounted.

I've posted this before. Some many years ago, circa 1989/1990, I was at the old Ford Rally centre on Boreham Airfield in Essex doing some tractor trials. We we're using what was know as the 'west hanger'. Whilst eating my sandwiches one lunch hour, curiosity got the better of me, and I wandered over to a door in the partition wall to the other half of the hanger. I pulled it open, and stepped thro'. And then gawped. Lined up in a row were about 25 RS200's, from meek and mild, to beastly ones. That's not all. There were spare chassis, spare body shells, crates and crates of spares, engines, gearboxes, suspension and brakes. The lot. There were even the patterns for casting some of the bits and pieces. Whilst we were doing our tractor trials, the occasional one was sold, and we'd see it getting bit of a shake down on the airfield track. I'm wondering if any PH'ers know what happend to them, plus all the bits and pieces?

Around 3 years ago there were 5 RS200's living within 4 miles of my workshop & 2 of them were sat in my garage.... 1 was a original 2.1 litre Evo version and the other was a 1.8 litre road based version which we were fitting a 680hp Evo engine & transmission into. They were great looking cars & i had always wanted to drive one, when the day arrived & i got my chance to drive one while we were carrying out mapping of the ECU it was a bit of a let down to say the least. Compared to a modern Jap Evo or Subaru the RS200 just felt like such hard work to drive and didn't inspire any confidence. I described the RS at the time as a Tractor with small wheels. To be fair looking back now these cars are nearly 30 years old & were designed for motor sport & not as road cars being driven by mere mortals.

How do we persuade Ford to make a modern version of the RS200? In the same way they did with the GT.

That's something I'd like to see!

Great vid, brings back the good old days for me, when i was 15. My old mate Ali owned this when i lived in Oman in the 80s. I will never forget the 1st ride in this car! It felt alot quicker off the line than a 3.3 Turbo Porka. It was a strange colour though (Pearl green) and the paint was crap, the doors bonnet & boot lid didnt match. I did talk him into painting wheels white though, as they came from factory in green like car.

I still want to see the group B rally cars timed against the modern WRC cars to see what would set the fastest time.

Yes if the rally was tight and twisty the WRC cars would win but give a stage like in Finland I would not be so sure.

Anyway the WRC needs group B back IMO

Having driven both the WRC era cars will leave the Group B era cars in their wake.... im also sure a few years back in Ireland this was proved aswell when a few Group B cars were run against WR spec cars.

I think you'd be dissappointed with the outcome on just about any stage these days. The Evos and Imprezas of the late 90s were vastly superior in terms of suspension, brake and tyre design, and not much less powerful.

Did you write that underwater and upside down? It made lutelyabso sense no.

You have driven an RS200 then I take it? Turning a wheel on the spot.... because he can and doesn't spend time underwater weightless.
