You are not one of those 24h/7/52 drivers who keeps going round and round in one gear at Nardo or some place like that. wink

Bought it will 11k on the clock, used it as my day to day stter (I did 20K in my GT3 in 14 months before that) and it pounds up and down motorways and A roads most weeks. Runs as well today as it did at 11K. Full book of stamps, never treated badly, needs a few bits of tlc to make it mint but straight car and the only issues I've had have been niggles rather than major.....touch wood.

it does make you wonder whether this will be as good as the old car. one of my closest friends has a B7 RS4 avant, it's now got around 80k on it which he bought from new, think he's selling up soon though.

judging by the name it'll have the S-tronic box.

sad to say, i have an inkling the old one will be better, even the RS5 which is years newer isn't as good, and they went in with the target to better the M3, and that failed.

funny isn't it though how BMW refuse to make an M3 estate, yet audi shifted a few of these. not sure if they'd make up the development costs, mind.
we have enough problems getting BMW to make a saloon M3 nevermind an estate version.
All you Audi owners, stop wasting your money. Go and buy an M5, much better fun!!!!tongue out

As above,

I think the reason for the DSG only is to protect itself from the heavy footed.

Im sure i read somewhere that in some cars, it is the only option as they couldnt find a clutch that would handle the grunt.

I could, and more than likely be, incorrect.
I would suggest it's more to do with CO2 figures, DSG will always do much better.

think I am right that you can't get a (new) S4 with a manual any more.

to be fair though, the 7 speed DSG is pretty dam flawless, it's certainly the first Auto I have driven that I could not do better than with a stick.

i'm not so sure, if i needed a fast but fun estate, i'd have taken a B7 RS4 avant over an M5; if i needed a big fast estate, i'd take the M5.

when my friend got the RS4 it wasn't long until he discovered the boot was considerably smaller than what it replaced....it's not a particularly big boot for an estate; but i think i'd take one over an M5 if it was just for fun....

hardly surprising since the 4 is a class smaller than the 5, the RS6 is the audi equivalent of the M5

Wouldn't surprise me to see the RS4 as S-Tronic only, they've gone that way with the S4 after all. Emissions are lower with the DSG box vs. a manual due to the way in which it changes up at the earliest opportunity making the S4 DSG, for instance, £260 a year "road tax" vs. the £450 odd for the manual.

Of course, S-Tronic is a near £1500 option on that car (or was) so you have to factor that in if it's a purchase purely done on the numbers.

Didn't Clarkson say (if you set any store by his opinion but it seemed genuine) that DSG cars are brilliant except in town when they are dim-witted and fail to provide the required instant response or non-consecutive gear selection when required.
He was talking about the paddle shift in the Lambo Aventador, which is a single clutch affair. Single clutch sequential boxes do tend to be quite slow to shift and clunky at lower speeds, so he was likely correct in his observation.

Double clutch boxes shift 'instantly' and as a result are if anything nippier than manuals in traffic, depending on how the shift points are mapped. VAG DSG boxes result in quite sluggish performance at low speeds in 'D' mode because the shifts seem to be made as early as possible, presumably for economy/emissions reasons. In 'S' mode they are totally responsive as they attempt to keep the revs in the power band of the turbo but this means jerkier progress at those low 'in traffic' speeds which is not ideal. You can always start changing manually with the paddles if you need to.
Well I just re-watched the Fifth Gear where Plato compares the manual Cayman with the PDK Cayman and basically concluded it was 30 kilos heavier and he hated it and it was half a second slower than the manual round the track. I suppost it depends whether you want to interact with the car rather than have a PlayStation experience.

that review was at best bks the main issue was at the time everyone had set a standard for how the paddles on duel clutch work and porsche being porsche decided to reverse the buttons, he kept hitting the wrong buttons lol, i believe porker paddles now work the same as everyone elses right for up and left for down

and the VAG 7 speed wet clutch is on a different planet in terms of performance compared to the old 6 speed dry clutch systems

and what's the relevance of this?

PDK bears little resemblance to the S-Tronic used in the A4/S4 range, assides the fact that the Cayman is a mid-engined sports car vs. a front engined 4/5 door saloon/estate car.
