...its refreshing to see a manufacturer charge less for the stripped out version, maybe porsche, mini and renault could follow suit?
I thought Porsche already priced their cars like that?

Hang on, I thought this was aimed at least partly at the drift scene and they've removed the LSD? Are they expecting people to fit their own, higher spec ones?
Don't drifters weld the diffs up anyway?

I guess people will be able to fit a plate diff rather than the Torsen and choose whether it's 1.5/2-way/amount of lock etc

That's amazing. I think I'd pay just slightly more for painted bumpers though!
Or buy a black one smile

With such a massive Japanese tuner market, this is a sound strategy. Let them buy the back to basics model which provides the perfect platform for racing (and inevitably drifting) versions.
Of course. When reading the article that hadn't occured to me, but now you say it it's blindingly obvious.

Very clever indeed!

How much can it actually cost to paint bumpers and fit a set of 16'' alloys???? Think an imtermediate version would be good with paint and wheels.....

This isnt a new thing. I remember when i bought my EP3 back in 2002 and there WAS an option back then to buy a stripped version from the UK dealership which had no radio, no sound deadening, no electric windows, no parcel shelf, etc etc etc but i'm not sure i ever saw ANYONE in the UK bought this version. Japan i'm sure they would.

40kg doesn't seem like much of a weight loss really, has it still got electric windows? (can't see keep fit window winders on the doors).

But still, what would £16k end up as through an importer to the UK? scratchchin

Its all very well people saying how its great that Toyota are doing a basic version and that they would buy one however I am willing to bet (not much - I'm poor) that realistically nobody over here would buy them because there would be very limited market come resale time, whereas over in Japan I do think that there is a market for a bum basic versions as they have a far bigger tuning scene. Mitsubushi used to offer a basic version like with the EVO and Subaru with the Impreza didnt they?

All credit to Toyota for doing this, they clearly know the market the 86 is entering.

This is the principle of it, the customer immediately replaces the bumpers & wheels with something aftermarket, likewise the steering wheel & gearknob.

Surprised it hasn't got a pair of wooden crates for seats waiting to be replaced with racing seats.

The TRD version looks great! Certainly a car that I will be very interested in once they have come and will may well consider getting one in a few years time.

I fear you might have missed the point, this is'nt a cheaper version, it is a mechano kit thats built to prove it works, now you have to take it apart and make it as you wish.

Even though I'm really not a fan of this car and think its dated before its launch...Toyota have to be commended on offering this kind of variety and at a sensible price... good direction.

Really like this car,am looking forward to seeing one in the metal

Genuine question but coming at it another way does an LSD, some alloys, a radio / speakers, no air con, some un-painted plastic and taking off a few other sundry bits really amount to a circa £9k difference between the two specs??

A 40kg saving and sacrificing the LSD doesn't sound like it would be the drivers choice. Probably more for the pimp my ride then sit in a car park crowd.

Oops sorry - very genuine indeed (I'm not the sarcastic type!).

I was reading the article thinking "interesting, but I imagine the appeal will be quite limited" - it hadn't even entered my mind the aftermarket tuner reason.

The £10k does, though.
